Paris 2024 Olympic tennis champion Novak Djokovic continues to write his name in the history books.

After pushing through pain in his ankle that required multiple medical time-outs, the 24-time Grand Slam champion defeated Spain’s Jaume Munar 6-3, 5-7, 6-2 in two hours and 40 minutes on Tuesday (7 October).

Despite punishing conditions, including humidity levels exceeding 82 per cent, the 38-year-old advanced to the quarterfinals of the Shanghai Masters for the 11th time.

Djokovic is now the oldest player to reach this stage of an ATP Masters 1000 event, surpassing the record held previously by fellow tennis great Roger Federer. Federer was 38 years and two months old when he made the quarters of the Shanghai event back in 2019.

The Serbian star is 38 years and four months old, and a win in the People’s Republic of China would be his 41st – a record he already holds.
