On the ATP side, the Shanghai Masters is in full swing. Novak Djokovic is the highest-ranked player left in the draw after some shock losses and withdrawals, including Jannik Sinner's concerning retirement. The defending champion could barely walk as he called it quits in the third set of his third-round match against Tallon Griekspoor on Sunday.

Rune urges ATP to add heat rule

Holger Rune wants the ATP to implement a heat rule after the worrying scenes in Shanghai this fortnight. Jannik Sinner is one of seven men to have retired mid-match, while Rune had his vitals checked earlier in the tournament and Novak Djokovic threw up on court on Sunday.

After reaching the quarter-finals, the world No. 11 said: "I think there should be some kind of rule. We can handle a certain amount of heat because, you know, we are fit, we're strong, we're mentally strong as well, but there's always a limit.

"I think it's also important to take care of your health. We need to survive. I think some kind of rule, you know, not that we should stop if it's just more than this, but like the Grand Slam, you know, they have a feeling on when it's a little bit too much, and we wait a little bit to see if it drops."

Djokovic calls physio

Novak Djokovic has just called the physio to the court after taking a 3-1 lead over Jaume Munar in Shanghai.

The No. 4 seed started stretching as he sat on his bench and shook his head before the trainer came to the court. Djokovic already had strapping on his hamstring, but he was pointing to his Achilles instead of his thigh when the physio arrived.

He's now having a full medical timeout. Djokovic appeared to be wincing and biting his towel.

"He’s definitely pointing at the Achilles behind," retired ATP pro Ryan Harrison said on commentary as a replay of the last point played.

"Well when you have an Achilles injury or a muscle injury that pulls, oftentimes you see them pull up insttantly, this looks to be something that he might have felt in the aftermath of the run when he was walking to the corner. It’s the left calf that he’s getting work on. It’s the left side that he has strapping.

"Just the way he’s sitting there with the leg fully out like that is a bit concerning.

"When you see someone break serve and then immediately stop after, that’s a bit worrisome."

Rune survives

No. 10 seed Holger Rune is through to the quarter-finals in Shanghai - but he was made to work for it.

The Danish star recovered after losing a tight, 74-minute second set and roared in delight as he defeated Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard 6-4 6-7(7) 6-3.

Rune said: ""I don’t know if there were so many ups and downs, I held my serve all the way but managed to break him twice. He was serving very well today, he also showed his level against [Taylor] Fritz, he’s a very tough player to beat on this surface.

"A little bit better conditions to play in today. I’m just very happy with my mindset again. I played every point, I stayed there even after I lost the second set, I was a bit frustrated but came back and was very determined for the third set and managed to hold my nerve again so that’s what is most important."

Raducanu made mistake during first-round retirement

Emma Raducanu has been told that she could have called the doctor much earlier into her first-round match against Ann Li on Tuesday.

The Brit was 6-1 4-1 down after around an hour of play when she received an examination from tournament medical staff and decided to call it quits. But Jonathan Overend believes she should have taken action sooner.

“I do feel maybe she should have called for attention earlier in the match when it was clear that she wasn’t feeling herself,” Jonathan Overend said on Sky commentary as Raducanu was examined.

“I suppose you’re proud out there, you don’t want to give anything away to your opponent, you don’t want to let anyone know that you’re not feeling great but the bottom line is health has to be the utmost priority.”

The heat rule is in effect on a brutally hot day in Wuhan, meaning players can take a 10-minute off-court break in between the second and third sets of matches.

Bergs voices concern for ball kids

The hot and humid conditions have been the talk of the town in Shanghai this week, with Jannik Sinner among seven players to have retired mid-match.

But world No. 44 Zizou Bergs, who is now through to the quarter-finals, expressed concerns for the ball kids on duty.

He said: " I think as tennis players, it's obviously not easy, but look at the ball boys and ball girls. They're doing an amazing job. I really feel sorry for them.

"We get an opportunity to drink during changeovers and they don't. I feel really bad for them, but I'm also really happy that nothing is happening to them."

Zverev conqueror speaks out

Arthur Rinderknech caused a big upset at the Shanghai Masters on Monday, coming from behind to beat No. 3 seed Alexander Zverev 4-6 6-3 6-2. The Frenchman also stunned Zverev at Wimbledon earlier this year.

After his latest victory, Rinderknech told L'Equipe: "Not many can say they're 2-0 up head-to-head against Zverev. I'm very happy, very proud. It means a lot to me to beat him again.

"My level of play has always been there for a long time. It's good. This is the path I'm looking for, that we're refining, it's a good thing.

"I spoke with Lucas [Pouille, coach] about the game plan, and we tried something I did a lot at Wimbledon. It's not what he (Zverev) is best at, so I tried to move him forward to unsettle him."

Sinner at risk of missing multi-million pound event

Jannik Sinner's schedule remains up in the air after he retired from the Shanghai Masters on Sunday.

The Italian is signed up to play in next week's Six Kings Slams exhibition, taking place in Saudi Arabia on October 15, 16 and 18.

Players get £1.1m just for turning up and competing, while the winner banks a further £3.4m. Last year, Sinner took home £4.5m when he was crowned the inaugural champion.

But it remains to be seen whether it's too quick of a turnaround time after his latest setback in Shanghai.

Raducanu hoping to 'set an example'

Emma Raducanu has opened up on her wish to set a good example to kids every time she steps on the tennis court, suggesting "you never know who's watching" a match.

"It’s funny to think that I have had that impact. It’s really nice to be reminded, you know, that you’re inspiring younger kids to play. And it’s very easy to lose sight of that kind of thing because you get so absorbed in your own world," the Brit told Tennis365 in Wuhan.

"But that is that is a really big achievement for me and it’s why I want to keep a really good example on the court, a good demeanour.

"I know some other players maybe sometimes lash out or lose their temper, and it’s inevitable time to time you don’t feel great, and you maybe step up.

"But I remind myself always to try and keep as best possible face, because you never know who’s watching, and you don’t want to, you know, set bad examples for the younger generation."
