Chinese star Zheng Qinwen suffers first-round Wimbledon exit for fourth straight year

Chinese tennis star Zheng Qinwen struggled again to make any kind of impact in a tournament after she was knocked out of the first round of Wimbledon for the fourth straight year.

Facing Katerina Siniakova in the opening round for the third time in four years, Zheng was looking to bounce back from a 3-1 career deficit, which included a pair of first-round losses at Wimbledon in 2023 and 2025, against the world No 36 Czech on Monday.

Zheng lost 6-4, 6-4 in just under two hours and is also expected to see her world ranking drop further over the next two weeks.

“I think my opponent played better than me in her service games today. I don’t think I performed badly during the key points; it’s just my opponent played better than me at those moments,” world No 138 Zheng said.

“During my breakpoint opportunities, I didn’t make mistakes and gave it away; it was because she served very well, and we also had many long rallies; it just happened that she won those points.

“So what I’m more concerned about was that my serve was broken too quickly.”
