Argentina Leads Latin Push as Wimbledon Day 2 Opens

Latin America’s Wimbledon campaign moves into a crowded second wave Tuesday, with nine singles players from the region scheduled for first-round matches across the All England Club.

Argentina has the heaviest presence on Day 2. No. 18 seed Francisco Cerúndolo faces Spain’s Jaume Munar on Court 14, No. 29 seed Tomás Martín Etcheverry plays Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego on Court 4, Mariano Navone meets ninth-seeded Flavio Cobolli on No. 2 Court, and Roman Andrés Burruchaga draws fifth-seeded Alex de Minaur on No. 3 Court. Nadia Podoroska gives Argentina another entry in the women’s draw, facing No. 12 Marta Kostyuk in the final scheduled match on No. 3 Court.

Chile’s Alejandro Tabilo, seeded No. 30, opens against Poland’s Kamil Majchrzak on Court 5. Brazil’s Beatriz Haddad Maia plays Maria Timofeeva on Court 9, Colombia’s Camila Osorio faces Switzerland’s Simona Waltert on Court 4, and Mexico’s Renata Zarazúa meets No. 29 seed Alexandra Eala on Court 12.

The schedule gives Latin American tennis one of its busiest early days at Wimbledon, and it comes after Brazil’s João Fonseca gave the region a clean start Monday. The 19-year-old beat Roberto Bautista Agut 7-6 (4), 6-4, 6-3 in his first-round match, one of the standout performances from the tournament’s opening day.

Tuesday’s matches will test how far the region’s clay-court strength can travel on grass. Cerúndolo, Tabilo and Etcheverry all enter as seeded players, but none has an easy path through a surface that often punishes hesitation and rewards first-strike tennis. Cerúndolo’s match with Munar should be a physical baseline battle. Tabilo has a more favorable seed line but must manage the pressure of opening the day. Etcheverry gets a dangerous first-round opponent in Sonego, an experienced Italian who can shorten points with his serve and forehand.

Navone, Burruchaga and Podoroska face the steepest assignments. Navone opens against Cobolli, the No. 9 seed, while Burruchaga runs into de Minaur, one of the quickest players in the men’s draw. Podoroska’s late match against Kostyuk gives Argentina another chance at an upset, but also one of the toughest women’s matchups on the schedule.

For the women, Haddad Maia carries Brazil’s main hopes after Fonseca’s Monday win. Osorio has a more open first-round match against Waltert, while Zarazúa will need to disrupt Eala, one of the seeded players in her section.

The broader story is numbers. Latin America has chances all over the grounds Tuesday, not just on one court or through one star. A strong day would put several players into the second round and give the region real depth before the draw begins to narrow.
