Romero became the new captain of the Argentine national team

Christian Romero, a defender for Atlético Madrid, has become the new captain of the Argentine national soccer team. The captain’s armband was automatically passed on to him, as longtime team leader Lionel Messi and second vice-captain Nicolás Otamendi retired from the national team after the 2026 World Cup.

Romero had previously led the Argentine team onto the field as captain on three occasions in the absence of the regular leaders. In total, the defender has played 58 matches for the national team, scored four goals, and won the 2022 World Cup and two Copa América titles. For his part, Lionel Messi ended his international career as Argentina’s all-time record holder, having played 207 matches and scored 125 goals over more than 20 years of service.
