Star Sri Lankan javelin thrower Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage admitted he missed two-time Olympic medallist Neeraj Chopra at the Asian Games, calling it “bad luck” that the Indian was forced to pull out of the continental multi-sport event due to an injury.

Pathirage, who has been in the form of his life with three 90m-plus throws this season, ​won the Asian Games men’s javelin throw gold​ with an effort of 88.55m.

“Yeah, he had a little injury on the ankle after Lausanne Diamond League. It’s his bad luck,” the 23-year-old Pathirage said when asked if he was missing Chopra during an interaction after the event on Monday.

“I do sometimes speak to him (Chopra),” he added.

Rain continued to disrupt the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, with Sri Lanka and Bangladesh advancing to ‌the men’s cricket semifinals after their quarter-final matches were abandoned without a ⁠ball being bowled.

Sri Lanka had been scheduled to face Nepal, while Bangladesh were set to take on ‌Malaysia. However, a second consecutive day of no play at the Korogi Sports ‌Park, on the southern outskirts of Nagoya, ‌meant ⁠the higher-ranked teams progressed automatically to ⁠the last four.

The Indian women’s shooting team secured a silver in the trap team event to continue the country’s medal-winning run in shooting at the Asian Games here on Tuesday.

The trio of Neeru Dhanda (118), Aashima Ahlawat (106) and Manisha Keer (104) finished with a combined total of 328 to finish second behind gold medallists China (346).

The Indian women’s squash team blanked Iran 3-0 in its last group-stage match to progress to the quarterfinals.

Starting the proceedings, Tanvi Khanna was declared the winner after her opponent Narges Soltani retired while trailing 5-11, 0-3 in the first singles.

Anahat Singh, who won a silver in the individual event, then saw off Fereshteh Eghtedari 3-0 (11-5, 11-4, 11-7) to give India an unassailable 2-0 lead.

In the third singles, veteran Joshna Chinappa, who also won a bronze in the mixed doubles event, prevailed 3-0 (11-1, 11-3, 11-9) over Najmeh Boushehrizadeh to complete the 3-0 win.

Dhiraj Bommadevara and Neeraj Chauhan advanced to the quarterfinals of the men’s recurve individual event after registering contrasting victories in the Round of 16.

Top seed Dhiraj overcame Chinese Taipei’s Cheng Hsiang-Hui 6-2, while Neeraj produced a strong performance to upset South Korea’s multiple Olympic medallist Kim Je Deok 6-4.

India’s Kishore Kumar Anbarasu’s valiant run in the men’s shortboard surfing competition came to an end after he lost to the Philippines’ Toby Espejon in the quarterfinals.

Kishore put up a strong fight but went down 5.37-8.53 to Espejon, missing out on a place in the medal rounds.

Athlete Gulveer Singh will aim to add a third medal to his tally while three boxers will look to book places in the finals as India’s campaign at the Asian Games enters its 10th day on Tuesday.

Gulveer, who has already won silver medals in the 1500m and 10,000m, will line up in the men’s 5000m final alongside compatriot Avinash Sable on the final day of athletics, according to Olympics.com.The men’s 5000m final is scheduled for 4:45 p.m.

Dev Meena and Kuldeep Kumar will compete in the men’s pole vault final at 2:50 p.m., followed by the women’s high jump final featuring Pooja Singh and Supriya Sindigere Basavaraju at 3:35 p.m.

Tanya Chaudhary and Anushka Yadav will compete in the women’s hammer throw final, while Pooja will line up in the women’s 800m final. Mohammed Afsal Pulikkalakath will contest the men’s 800m final.

India will also have three relay teams in medal races, with the mixed 4x100m relay final at 5:18 p.m., women’s 4x400m final at 5:35 p.m. and men’s 4x400m final at 5:47 p.m.

In boxing, Parveen Hooda will take on China’s Li Shu in the women’s 65kg semifinal at 10:15 a.m., while Ankush Panghal will face Uzbekistan’s reigning 75kg world champion Fazliddin Erkinboev in the men’s 80kg semifinal at 11 a.m. Narender Berwal will then face Kazakhstan’s reigning world champion Aibek Oralbay in the men’s +90kg semifinal at 11:30 a.m. All three Indians have already assured themselves of at least bronze medals.

The shooting range will also witness medal action, with the men’s and women’s trap events concluding. Neeru Dhanda, Manisha Keer and Aashima Ahlawat will compete in the women’s trap individual final at 10:30 a.m., while Kynan Chenai, Ahvar Rizvi and Shapath Bharadwaj will contest the men’s final at noon.

India’s women’s squash team will continue its Pool C campaign against Iran at 6:30 a.m., while the men’s volleyball team will face Qatar at 12:30 p.m. in a match that could decide the Pool C leaders.

In archery, Dhiraj Bommadevara and Neeraj Chauhan will begin their men’s recurve individual campaigns in the round of 16, while Kumkum Mohod and Kirti Sharma will compete in the women’s round of 16.
