Rain ends Nepal’s Asian Games cricket campaign - Kathmandu Post

Nepal’s national cricket team has been eliminated from the cricket tournament at the 20th Asian Games in Nagoya, Japan: its quarter-final match against Sri Lanka was cancelled due to rain before the toss.

Advantage by ranking

The match was to take place at Korogi Sports Park, but continuous rainfall prevented the teams from starting the game. Under the competition regulations, if a match cannot be played, the team with the higher ranking advances. Sri Lanka are ranked ninth in the ICC T20 rankings, while Nepal are 14th.

As a result, Sri Lanka advanced to the next round, while the Nepali team ended its Asian Games campaign, Kathmandu Post reports.

Matches in the rain

Rain has continued in Nagoya since Saturday. Nepal’s final group-stage match against Japan was also disrupted by the weather. The match was reduced to 15 overs, and Nepal scored 149 runs for four wickets. After Nepal’s innings ended, the rain resumed, so Japan could not begin its part of the game.

On Monday, the Pakistan-Hong Kong and India-Pakistan matches were also cancelled without a single ball being played. Earlier, Nepal opened the tournament with a five-wicket victory over Afghanistan.
