Pakistan beat Kazakhstan in Asian Games volleyball - Dawn

Pakistan's men's volleyball team defeated Kazakhstan 3:1 in the opening Group A match at the Asian Games in Aichi, Japan. The Pakistani team won the sets 25:16, 25:22 and 25:20, losing the third one 17:25.

Pakistan's top scorer was Murad Khan, who scored 21 points: 17 in attack and four on blocks. Usman Faryad Ali scored 14 points, Jehan Murad had 11, and Musawer Khan nine. Overall, Pakistan scored 92 points against Kazakhstan's 83 and converted 55 of 114 attacking attempts. The Kazakhs had an advantage in blocks — 10 to seven.

Two bronzes in squash

In men's singles squash, Noor Zaman defeated compatriot Mohammad Ashab Irfan in the third-place match — 11:7, 11:7, 11:3. The match lasted 26 minutes. Both athletes had already secured bronze medals after losing in the semifinals.

Noor Zaman lost to Malaysia's Eain Yow Ng in the semifinal, while Ashab Irfan was beaten by India's Abhay Singh. The advancement of two Pakistani players to the semifinals of the individual tournament was the country's first such result at a single Asian Games since 2002.

After the two squash medals, Pakistan's medal tally rose to four bronze medals. Earlier, bronze medals were won by the women's cricket team and Asim Khan in mixed martial arts in the up to 60 kg weight category, Dawn reports.

Other results of the day

Pakistan's men's epee team lost to Qatar 5:7 in the round of 16. In shooting, Rabia Kabir finished 41st in the qualification for the women's 25-metre pistol event with a score of 278-4x.

Athlete Ansar Abbas reached the final of the men's long jump, setting a personal best of 7.28 metres. In tennis doubles, Aqeel Khan and Mohammad Shoaib defeated Mongolia's Mandakh Davaadash and Sonompuntssag Enkhjargal — 6:2, 6:0. In the women's singles tournament, Mahin Aftab Qureshi lost to Thailand's Patcharin Chipchandei — 1:6, 1:6.

Pakistan's next volleyball opponent will be Uzbekistan, after which the team will play the tournament hosts, Japan.
