India women lost 3-2 to Singapore in the quarter-finals of the Asian Table Tennis Team Championships 2025 at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, on Monday.

Indian players Manika Batra and Yashaswini Ghorpade registered a win each, while Diya Chitale went down fighting in both her matches.

The defeat ended India’s hopes of a medal at the continental meet. On Sunday, Indian table tennis players lost to Hong Kong China in their men’s team quarter-finals.

In the opening match on Monday, Singapore’s Zhao Yun Tan, 166th in women’s singles rankings, stunned India’s world No. 44 Manika Batra 3-1 (11-8, 11-7, 6-11, 11-8).

Zhao Yun Tan took the first two games before Batra pulled one back in the third but the Singaporean table tennis player closed out the match in the fourth.

In another tight contest, Diya Chitale, ranked 36 places below her world No. 50 opponent Zeng Jian, went down fighting 3-2 (3-11, 12-10, 11-9, 5-11, 11-9).

Meanwhile, India’s world No. 89 Yashaswini Ghorpade impressed with a commanding 3-0 (11-7, 11-8, 11-8) win over Singapore’s 179th-ranked Ser Lin Qian.

Manika Batra bounced back in her second singles match, defeating Zeng Jian 3-1 (11-9, 8-11, 11-8, 12-10).

However, Diya Chitale lost the decider 3-0 (11-6, 11-5, 11-4) to Zhao Yun Tan, handing Singapore the overall 3-2 victory.

The 28th edition of the Asian Championships also serves as qualifiers for the 2026 ITTF World Team Championships Finals, with the top 13 teams securing their berths for next year’s global showpiece in London.

The Indian women’s team will now compete in the 5-8th place classification matches.

Both the Indian men’s and women's teams have, however, already qualified for the 2026 World Team Championships through the South Asian Regional Championships in Kathmandu in August.

India’s campaign at the Asian Table Tennis Team Championships will continue with classification matches for both the men and women. The tournament will conclude on Wednesday.
