0
Week 9 of the 2025 college football season has arrived. At this point in the season, contenders are starting to separate themselves from the pretenders, and this weekend should be no different with 22 of the teams ranked in the latest AP Top 25 poll in action.

The fun starts in Norman, Oklahoma, when the No. 13-ranked Sooners host No. 8 Ole Miss in a key SEC clash. The Rebels are coming off their first loss to Georgia last weekend, while the Sooners responded with a win over South Carolina after suffering their first loss to Texas in the Red River Rivalry earlier this month. No. 2 Indiana is also in action during the noon ET window against red-hot UCLA.

Iowa will face Minnesota at 3:30 p.m. ET on CBS in a battle of former Big Ten West foes. Another key game headlining at the same time is a matchup between No. 15 Missouri and No. 10 Vanderbilt, which is one of three ranked-on-ranked showdowns on the schedule in Week 9.

The late window is headlined by another important SEC matchup between No. 3 Texas A&M and No. 20 LSU. No. 25 Michigan is also in action against in-state rival Michigan State at 7:30 p.m. ET.

Arkansas pick six leads to Auburn QB change; Tigers WR Coleman banged up

Halftime: Arkansas 21, Auburn 10

Arkansas holds a 21-10 lead on Auburn in a battle of two teams still seeking their first SEC win of the season. The Tigers came out hot, with Cam Coleman hauling in an incredible touchdown catch to give Auburn the early lead on the first TD pass for the Tigers in a month.

However, Coleman went down with what SEC Network reported as a high ankle sprain later in the half. While he wasn't ruled out officially, his status to return is still in doubt and the Tigers' offense stalled out after taking a 10-0 lead. Arkansas rallied with 21 unanswered points in the second quarter, capped off by a 90-yard pick six that proved to be the final straw for Hugh Freeze with quarterback Jackson Arnold.

Arnold, who has struggled all season throwing the football, was pulled for the ensuing drive as Auburn turned to Ashton Daniels. That would seem to indicate Daniels will get the chance to lead a comeback effort in the second half, but he may have to do so without the services of Auburn's top receiving threat given Coleman's ankle injury.

For Arkansas, it took them a bit to get going, but Taylen Green and the offense started to find something in the passing game against the stout Auburn defense in the second quarter. Green has 163 yards and a TD through the air at halftime, and Bobby Petrino will likely look to air it out a bit more given their struggles to get anything going on the ground early.

No. 2 Indiana cruising against UCLA

Halftime: No. 2 Indiana 35, UCLA 3

The No. 2 team in the country is hardly breaking a sweat against UCLA this afternoon. The defense is leading the way with a pair of turnovers forced, including a pick six on the second play of the game. The Bruins are averaging just 2.2 yards per carry and 4.8 yards per attempt through the air. It's been tough sledding for UCLA in Bloomington.

Once the defense makes the play, the Indiana offense is taking advantage. That's especially the case for running back Roman Hemby, who is getting whatever he wants against the UCLA defense. He's already up to 72 yards and a pair of scores on the play. Expect him to keep leaning on the Bruins in the second half.

Georgia Tech taking care of business against Syracuse

No. 7 Georgia Tech 20, Syracuse 3

Georgia Tech shook off a sluggish start to take a comfortable halftime lead against Syracuse going into the half. It appears as if the Yellow Jackets are in good shape to maintain their undefeated record, which is something that just six FBS teams can boast at this point in the season.

Georgia Tech quarterback Haynes King has been efficient all afternoon long. He completed 18 of his 23 pass attempts for 183 yards and two touchdowns over the first two quarters and led the team with six carries for 59 yards. Tech was much more efficient on the ground in the second quarter after rushing for just 38 yards as a team in the first frame. Running back Malachi Hosley has looked particularly impressive, averaging 8.2 yards per carry.

USF doing what it wants offensively

Halftime: No. 16 South Florida 24, Memphis 14

The Bulls have the lead in a game with major implications for both the American title race and the College Football Playoff. Both teams entered the day 6-1, with USF's lone loss being on the road at Miami, and the Bulls are looking to pick up another big win on the road in conference play after dismantling North Texas two weeks ago. However, Memphis got off to a flying start, picking off Byrum Brown in USF territory on the opening possession and paying that off with a touchdown drive.

But from there, Brown and the Bulls took control by rattling off 21 straight points. Just before halftime, Memphis pulled a bit closer with a touchdown drive to stay in range, which USF answered with a 51-second field goal drive to go back up two scores going into the break.

The USF offense has been all Brown, who's thrown for 166 yards and a TD and added 74 yards and two touchdowns on the ground, accounting for two-thirds of their 349 yards of offense already.

Memphis only has 121 yards of offense on the game, but thanks to a short field to start the game and a solid final drive, they've kept things close in the first 30 minutes of play. That being said, Memphis is going to have to figure out something defensively if they're going to truly give themselves a chance at pulling the upset at home. Brown and the Bulls have done pretty much anything they want since that early turnover.

Bill Belichick striving for UNC's first ACC win

HALF: No. 16 Virginia 10, North Carolina 10

A 1-yard sneak from Tar Heels quarterback Gio Lopez has North Carolina and the 16th-ranked Cavaliers tied at intermission inside Kenan Memorial Stadium. It's a promising start for one of the ACC's last winless teams in league play. The Tar Heels nearly scored the game's first points on their second possession, but for the second time in as many games, fumbled into the end zone for a touchdown. Lopez is 17 of 25 for 173 yards passing at the half while Virginia's Chandler Morris has 107 yards and a score.

Auburn gets on board with absurd Cam Coleman catch

Mid 1Q: Auburn 7, Arkansas 0

In case you may have forgotten amid Auburn's offensive struggles thus far, Tigers star Cam Coleman is still one of the best receivers in America. He submitted his entry for catch of the year Saturday afternoon to give his Auburn team an early one-score lead on the road against Arkansas. With a Razorback defender dragging him to the ground, Coleman adjusted his body to catch an underthrown ball and snagged the pass with just one hand while remaining in bounds.

That was Coleman's first touchdown catch since Auburn's Sept. 20 loss to Oklahoma. He's up to two catches for 27 yards and the spectacular score already.

Oklahoma's student section trolls Lane Kiffin

'Gator Chomp' makes an appearance in Norman

Oklahoma's student section has read the headlines this week. The Sooners' poked at Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin during the first half the nationally ranked SEC battle with the "Gator Chomp" signal, an ode to Florida's coaching vacancy. Kiffin reportedly spoke to his team about job noise prior to Saturday's game. He's widely considered to be Florida's top choice to replace Billy Napier, who was fired last weekend in the middle of his fourth season amid a disappointing 3-4 start.

USF's Byrum Brown delivers highlight TD run vs. Memphis

USF quarterback Byrum Brown was not going to be stopped on a 44-yard touchdown run in the first quarter against Memphis. Taking the designed keeper, Brown made four Tigers miss and even hurdled a defender who had fallen after being blocked. The electrifying run put the Bulls up 14-7 with 1:10 remaining in the opening quarter. At the time, Brown led USF with 71 yards rushing on eight carries while completing 7 of 11 passes for 90 yards with an interception.

Oklahoma's Sategna gets loose for a 77-yard TD to tie things up with Ole Miss

The Oklahoma offense has struggled to find a consistent rhythm in the first half against Ole Miss, but the Sooners are tied at 10 early in the second quarter thanks to a pair of explosive pass plays. A deep ball from John Mateer set up their early field goal. Then, a minute into the second quarter he found a wide open Isaiah Sategna on a crosser, and the speedster took it 77 yards to the house to tie things up.

Ole Miss has dominated the game flow for most of the first quarter-plus in Norman, but as has been an Achilles heel of this defense all year, explosive plays have kept them from taking full control. Now the Rebels have to find an answer themselves on offense and try to shore up their coverage to avoid giving up more big plays down the field.

Pick six gets Hoosiers up early on suddenly red-hot UCLA

1Q: No. 7 Indiana 14, UCLA 0

Just two plays into the game, No. 2 Indiana got on the board against UCLA thanks to its defense. Defensive lineman Stephen Daley came screaming through the Bruins' offensive line, and he was in Nico Iamaleava's lap before the play fake was over. That forced a low throw from Iamaleava, and Aiden Fisher picked it off at the line of scrimmage and returned it for the score.

UCLA and Iamaleava have been much better in recent weeks, but this is a much tougher test, and they found that out the hard way. Since that score, the Hoosiers have also added another touchdown via a Roman Hemby rushing score.

Tim Skipper -- an interim head coach for a second time -- has UCLA rolling 'full speed ahead' after 0-4 start

It started with a knock on Tim Skipper's office door a month ago. It crystalized in his mind when he heard recently UCLA would be on Big Noon Kickoff against Indiana -- a suggestion that seemed so impossible a month ago that he would have assumed people were messing with him.

Everything else in between -- the staff changes, a historic upset over Penn State, three straight wins, the fun that's happening again in LA -- is a blur for the Bruins' 47-year-old interim head coach.

"I didn't even know it's been a month until you said it's been a month," Skipper told CBS Sports. "It's just a lot of twists and turns. … I'm happy the whole organization is going in one direction, a healthy direction. The challenge is to keep it going."

UCLA lost to New Mexico, 35-10, on Friday, Sept. 12.

Two days later the Bruins fired head coach DeShaun Foster. That's when the UCLA administration approached Skipper, at the time a special assistant to the head coach, to take over.

College Football Playoff race: Oklahoma vs. Ole Miss, Texas A&M vs. LSU take center stage in Week 9

Both the SEC and College Football Playoff races should gain plenty of clarity in Week 9 of the 2025 season. The Southeast's premier college football conference is home to three ranked matchups on Saturday, each with major implications on the national landscape.

Two league contenders and Ole Miss and Oklahoma are set to face off in a contest that could decide either's conference championship game fate. No. 10 Vanderbiltlooks to stay hot against a No. 15 Missouri team that it has not won against since 2019.

No. 20 LSU highlights the evening slate as it tries to keep its season alive against No. 3 Texas A&M, which is one of just six remaining unbeaten teams. Outside of the SEC, there are a few playoff contenders that have to deal with major road tests this weekend.

The Six Pack: Picks for Oklahoma vs. Ole Miss, Texas A&M vs. LSU and Tom Fornelli's lock for Week 9

We're at the point of the college football season where teams are who they are. Sure, there are rare cases where you see mediocre teams level up, or great teams fall apart, but for the most part, we know who's who in the zoo.

That team that's struggled to block all year? Yeah, they're probably not going to figure it out this week. The quarterback who has struggled against the blitz? He will continue to struggle against the blitz.

In theory, it makes it easier to figure out how matchups will play out. In reality, the folks setting the lines know all of this stuff, too. Still, there are a few games this week on the board I'm feeling confident about, which isn't something I've been able to say much this season. I mean, the results in this column speak for themselves.

College football schedule, games 2025: What to watch in Week 9

Week 9 of the 2025 college football season should, once again, prove pivotal in a loaded SEC race. The SEC is home to all three games featuring ranked opponents during Saturday's slate, including two clashes between top-15 foes.

No. 8 Ole Miss gets things started at noon with its road trip to No. 13 Oklahoma. This will be the third meeting all-time between the now "annual opponents" under the SEC's new nine-conference game scheduling model moving forward.

No. 15 Missouri and No. 10 Vanderbilt are each trying to keep their SEC hopes alive as they take the field in Nashville. Elsewhere, No. 3 Texas A&M is trying to maintain its status as one of just six unbeaten teams nationally at No. 20 LSU.

South Dakota State QB Chase Mason (foot) uncertain for Dakota Marker vs. No. 1 NDSU

South Dakota State starting quarterback Chase Mason's status remains uncertain ahead of Saturday night's FCS showdown against No. 1 North Dakota State. According to ESPN, there is a "less than 50% chance" Mason plays in the battle for the Dakota Marker with a foot injury.

Mason has led the No. 2 ranked Jackrabbits to a 7-0 record as the starter this season, completing 66% of his passes for 1,419 yards with 11 touchdowns and one interception. He's also rushed for 165 yards and four touchdowns on the ground.

Iowa State DT Domonique Orange expected to play vs. No. 11 BYU

Iowa State defensive tackle Domonique Orange, one of the nation's premier interior defenders, is expected to suit up against No. 11 BYU after being listed as doubtful earlier in the week, according to ESPN. Orange's status was upgraded to questionable on Friday night's injury report.

His presence is particularly significant given BYU's rushing attack, which ranks 10th nationally, averaging 232.9 yards per game. The 6-foot-4, 325-pound tackle could be a key factor in slowing down the Cougars' ground game and anchoring the Cyclones' defensive front. In seven games played this season, Orange has 12 total tackles and one quarterback hit.

Iowa State is aiming to end a two-game skid and stay in contention in the crowded Big 12 race, facing an unbeaten BYU team at the top of the standings.

No. 7 Georgia Tech banged up vs. Syracuse

According to ESPN's Pete Thamel, No. 7 Georgia Tech will without three starters who were listed as questionable going into Saturday's game against Syracuse. Wide receiver Malik Rutherford, center Harrison Moore and defensive back Jy Gilmore will all be out against the Orange.

Rutherford is tied for the team lead with 23 receptions, and his 202 receiving yards rank third, so quarterback Haynes King will be without one of his top targets and his center on offense. Defensively, Georgia Tech will be particularly shorthanded in the secondary with cornerback Ahmari Harvey set to miss another game. Harvey leads the team with four pass break-ups, and Gilmore has registered two.

College football Week 9 storylines

If you can't get enough of the college football coaching carousel, which is already in full swing this season before Halloween, this is an important weekend on the schedule.

We are at the point of the season where all it can take is one result to have a significant impact -- good or bad -- on a coach's standing at his current school or potential candidacy at another.

James Franklin learned that the hard way after a shocking loss to Northwestern. Mike Norvell almost learned the same lesson last weekend after a Stanford loss had some Florida State boosters up in arms and pushing for his dismissal.

It's not all negative, though. With seven Power Four jobs already open, there are plenty of school administrators and boosters keeping a close eye on how coaches fare down the stretch. Sometimes all it takes is a big win or two at the right time to propel you up a school's wish list.
