Oregon State defeats UTEP 33-7 with dominant performance in El Paso: Live updates recap

EL PASO, TEXAS — Oregon State’s dominating win over UTEP was expected. The Beavers won, 33-7.

No, that wasn’t surprising. What may be is that the Beavers, now 2-2, enter Pac-12 play as legitimate contenders.

That’s not something many people expected.

UTEP gets one conversion then stalls. Punt to OSU 26.

A 27-yard pass gets UTEP moving. Fourth-and-one conversion. Another 15-yard penalty, this one on Jarrel Comer. 16-yard touchdown pass from EJ Colson Jr. to Carver Cheeks. Isaiah Houi was in coverage and Cheeks was favoring his ankle pre-snap, no matter. Oregon State 20, UTEP 8 - 10:08

HALFTIME: OREGON STATE 20, UTEP 0

JaMarcus Shephard losing it on halftime radio. “We got too many penalties! It’s ridiculous! That’s ridiculous! We basically walked them down the field on that last drive. I hate 15-yard penalties! We’re not going to be that team!”

Takari Hickle called for unsportsmanlike conduct, which gives UTEP its second first down via penalty. UTEP gains its first organic first down via a run. Another 15-yarder on a horsecollar tackle by Tevita Pome’e. Gyrice Goodman sack of EJ Colson Jr. ends the half as UTEP can’t stop the clock.

AJ Newberry runs for 35 yards. Eric Olsen 40-yard gain. Drive stalls and OSU settles for a 35-yard field goal from Caleb Ojeda. Oregon State 20, UTEP 0 - 2:20

UTEP gets to third-and-two and Oregon State gets pressure for a tackle for loss. UTEP timeout (6:04) and punt.

AJ Newberry 25-yard run, then a couple of missed throws sets up third-and-10 at UTEP 38 and Oregon State calls timeout (8:53). A five-yard pass to Eric Olsen and OSU lines up to go on fourth down and UTEP calls timeout (8:20). Turnover on downs.

Kai Wheaton in. UTEP gains its first first down via an offsides penalty on Sai Vadrawale III on a third down. UTEP turns it over on downs. Beavers gained five yards from the interception and ensuing drive.

Braden Atkinson throws into double coverage and is intercepted by Kaleb Miles at midfield.

Daniel Matagi would-be sack by EJ Colson breaks free. False start nullifies the gain. OSU gets pressure on third-and-seven for an incompletion and another three-and-out.

Three straight first down passes for Braden Atkinson and UTEP calls timeout (8:38). Miners have no way of matching up with Eric Olsen. Incompletion on third-and-nine. Caleb Ojeda 37-yard field goal is good. Oregon State 10, UTEP 0 - 7:22

Isaiah Houi and Logan Knapp start. Takari Hickle sack on P&10 effectively derails the entire three-and-out possession for UTEP, which went backwards.

AJ Newberry 12-yard touchdown run caps a seven-play, 75-yard drive with ease. A couple of Braden Atkinson passes to Aaron Butler for 26 yards. An unusual play that appeared to be by design with Atkinson spinning for a handoff to Butler. Oregon State 7, UTEP 0 - 12:23
