Rennes head coach Habib Beye confirmed Jeremy Jacquet suffered a “serious” injury in the club’s 3-1 loss to Lens on Saturday.

The defender, who this week sealed a £60 million ($82M) switch to Anfield, was replaced in the 69th minute after sustaining an injury to his left shoulder. Jacquet seemed in significant pain and was replaced by Mahamadou Nagida.

Jacquet had to support his left arm and was assisted off the pitch by a member of the Rennes medical team. There’s a bitter irony that the injury occurred just five days after he completed his Liverpool medical before agreeing his summer move to the Reds.

Speaking after Saturday’s game, Beye said: “For Jeremy, it's his shoulder, and for Abdelhamid [Ait Boudlal, the other Rennes player injured] it's muscular.

“We'll have time to see, but it's definitely quite serious for both of them,” added the former Newcastle United and Aston Villa defender.

While Liverpool will be concerned about the long-term repercussions of the injury, it’s Rennes who will have the most immediate concern.

Jacquet has established himself as a vital member of the team, missing just two league matches this season, both due to suspension.

The 20-year-old underlined the importance of helping Rennes to finish the season strongly, in a post released after his transfer to Liverpool was confirmed.

“I am honored to sign for Liverpool, one of the greatest football institutions in the world,” Jacquet said via a statement.

“It was also very important for me to finish my time in red and black on a high, at my boyhood club, the club of my heart.

“I'm approaching this second half of the season with the desire to experience some great moments with my team-mates and the fans.”

Saturday’s result was a blow to Rennes’ hopes of securing a European place, while Lens moved above Paris Saint-Germain and into first place with another three points.

Meanwhile, Liverpool will hope for a positive update on Jacquet in the coming days.

And it seems the misfortune that has inflicted the Reds’ defenders this season even extends to future squad members.

Currently, only four of Arne Slot’s eight defenders are fit ahead of the clash with Manchester City this weekend. Joe Gomez may be back in time to face Pep Guardiola’s side at Anfield, but Giovanni Leoni, Conor Bradley and Jeremie Frimpong will miss out through injury.
