Vincent Kompany’s chances of becoming next Manchester City manager revealed

Bayern Munich’s Vincent Kompany has been labelled as Manchester City’s No.1 target to replace Pep Guardiola as the Premier League giant’s next head coach.

There is a growing sense within football circles that the Catalan – who will surpass 10 years as the club’s head coach in the summer – will leave at the end of the ongoing season, despite his contract running until 2027.

Manchester City have reportedly started looking for possible replacements, with the likes of Enzo Maresca and Roberto De Zerbi claimed to be in the frame, while former Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso also attracts strong interest.

Maresca – who previously worked as Manchester City’s Under-21 boss before being promoted as Guardiola’s assistant – was sacked by Chelsea on New Year’s Day after revealing to club chiefs that he had spoken to Manchester City and Juventus regarding their managerial roles.

But despite a three-man shortlist – reportedly made up of Maresca, Alonso and Como boss Cesc Fabregas – Football Insider now report that Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany is Manchester City’s prime target for the position, should it become available.

The former Etihad Stadium captain holds legend status in the north-west and won four Premier League titles at Manchester City, alongside two FA Cups, four League Cups and two Community Shields.

From 11 seasons, he played 360 games for the Citizens and was inducted into the Premier League Hall of Fame in 2022 as a result of his influence as one of Manchester City and the English top-flight’s best-ever captains.

To replace Pep Guardiola may prove to be an impossible task given his role in transforming the Citizens into a powerhouse in both English and European football. Yet, his future has come under scrutiny in recent months after tumbling at the top of the pyramid.

Of course, Manchester City will be desperate to land a long-term appointment that will thrust the club into further success and Vincent Kompany – aside from his loyalty and connection to the City supporters – could be the man to steer the club into ascendancy.

His current role in the German capital is cushy, granted the giants stand six points clear at the top of the Bundesliga table after losing just once all season. And having won the league title in his first campaign at the club, he could be interested in the idea of a new challenge.

A similar picture can be painted covering his time at Burnley when he led the Clarets to Championship promotion with a record-breaking tally of 101 points, winning 29 from 46 matches that season and only losing three times.

But if he is to return to the Premier League – where he last led Burnley to 24 losses and subsequent relegation back into England’s second tier – he must do a better job at the Etihad Stadium if he wants the backing of the board.
