Davis Cup Rules Explained: Format, Schedule, Date, Time & Everything You Need to Know

The Davis Cup is different from an ATP tournament because players play for their countries instead of for themselves. The 2026 edition has stages with countries competing in qualifiers before the top eight teams fight for the trophy in November.

How Does the Davis Cup Format Work?

A Davis Cup match between two countries is called a tie. The way the match is set up depends on which stage of the competition it's in.

In home-and-away Qualifiers and World Group matches, each tie is played over two days. Each tie has up to five matches, with the first day having two singles matches. The second day starts with doubles before the two reverse singles matches. The first country to win three matches wins the tie.

Every match is decided by best-of-three tiebreak sets. That means a player needs to win two sets to win a match.

For example, the first singles match has one country's No. 1 Player against the opposing country's No. 2. The second singles match has the No. 2 Player against the No. 1. The next day has doubles, followed by the ranked players in singles, with a final singles match if needed.

What Are the 2026 Davis Cup Dates and Final 8 Format?

The 2026 Davis Cup schedule started with the round of Qualifiers and World Group play-offs in February. The next big stage is the round of Qualifiers and World Group I and II matches from September 18-20.

Seven nations will go to the Final 8, joining Italy, which is automatically qualified as the host and the current champion. The Final 8 will take place in Bologna from November 24-29.

In the Final 8, matches are played at one location. There are three matches: two singles and a deciding doubles match if needed. The country that wins the tie moves on, creating a knockout path from the quarterfinals to the final.

The quarterfinals for the 8 are scheduled for November 24-26, the semifinals for November 27-28, and the final for November 29, though match times might change based on the official schedule.
