Czech Republic beat US to reach Davis Cup Finals - Dawn

The Czech tennis team defeated the United States 3:2 in Prague in the second qualifying round of the Davis Cup and advanced to the finals of the tournament, which will take place in November in Bologna. Jiří Lehečka secured the decisive point for the hosts by beating Learner Tien 6:3, 7:5.

As Dawn reports, the Czech Republic eliminated the American team at this stage of the competition in a decisive match for the second consecutive year. A year earlier in Delray Beach, Jakub Menšík secured the Czech victory over the United States by defeating Frances Tiafoe.

Decisive matches in Prague

The teams began the day level at 1:1. The Americans took the lead after Christian Harrison and Austin Krajicek defeated Adam Pavlásek and Patrik Rikl 5:7, 6:3, 7:6 (10:8). In this match, the U.S. representatives saved four match points.

Menšík levelled the tie by defeating recent US Open finalist Ben Shelton 5:7, 6:4, 6:3. Lehečka, who had beaten Shelton in two sets the previous day, recovered from an early break down in the first set of the final match against Tien. In the second set, Tien led 3:0, but Lehečka won the match on his fourth match point.

Lehečka noted that Davis Cup victories are different because of the team nature of the competition. According to him, without Menšík's victory over Shelton, he would not have had the opportunity to play the decisive match.

Other qualifying results

South Korea reached the Davis Cup final eight for the first time in history, defeating India 3:1 in Seoul. Kwon Soon-woo secured the decisive point for the Korean team by beating Sumit Nagal 6:1, 6:2.

Austria also secured a place in the finals by defeating Belgium 3:1 in Vienna. Jurij Rodionov claimed the decisive victory by beating Zizou Bergs 7:6 (8:6), 6:3. In Bologna, hosts Italy will seek to win their fourth consecutive title. The United States, which has won the Davis Cup 32 times, has not won the trophy since 2007.
