Top-tier table tennis returns to Indian shores with the WTT Star Contender Chennai 2026, scheduled to get underway at the Tamil Nadu Physical Education and Sports University from Tuesday.All matches from the WTT Star Contender Chennai 2026 will be available to watch on live streaming in India.The tournament marks the second time Chennai will host a WTT Star Contender event and the fourth such tournament to be staged in India. Goa hosted the other twoWTT Star Contender Chennai 2026 will be conducted under the direction of legendary Indian table tennis player Sharath Kamal, who retired from professional table tennis at the same venue during last year’s event.The Chennai meet will feature men’s and women’s singles, doubles and mixed doubles competitions and will follow a knockout format. Qualifying rounds will precede the main draw, which begins on February 12.A total of 167 players from 17 countries will participate, including 90 Indian players and 77 overseas paddlers.Reigning champions Oh Jun-sung of the Republic of Korea and Miwa Harimoto of Japan headline the international field.India’s challenge will be led by world No. 33 Manav Thakkar, who reached the semi-finals at the previous edition of the tournament.Experienced campaigners Sathiyan Gnanasekaran and Harmeet Desai will keep him company in the men’s singles main draw.Manush Shah, winner of the WTT Feeder Series Vadodara 2026, and women’s singles contender Ayhika Mukherjee are also part of the Indian contingent, while young prospects Yashaswini Ghorpade, Diya Chitale and Snehit Suravajjula will be looking to make an impression on home soil.Sreeja Akula, India’s top-ranked women’s singles table tennis player in the world at 42, will not play in Chennai due to a shoulder injury.Manika Batra is also missing from the entry list, making Diya Chitale (world No. 90) Ayhika (world No. 91) and Yashaswini (world No. 78), India’s top bets in women’s singles.Top seeds Manav Thakkar and Manush Shah will lead India’s men’s doubles campaign.Manush Shah will also team up with Diya Chitale and headline India’s challenge in the mixed doubles. The pair recently became India’s first-ever WTT Finals qualifiers and claimed the mixed doubles title at the WTT Contender Muscat 2026.The tournament also provides opportunities for emerging talents through WTT Youth nominations.Abhinandh Pradhivadhi, part of India’s bronze medal-winning team at the ITTF World Youth Championships, will compete in men’s singles, while 2025 Asian youth champion Divyanshi Bhowmick has received a women’s singles youth nomination.Syndrela Das will be another youth prospect to keep an eye on. She won two titles at the WTT Youth Contender Vadodara last month before becoming the WTT Feeder Vadodara mixed doubles champion with Payas Jain.Syndrela, along with Olympian Sutirtha Mukherjee, will start from the qualifiers in women’s singles. The 16-year-old has also received entries in the mixed and women’s doubles main draws.The WTT Star Contender Chennai 2026 will conclude on February 15 with the two singles finals and the mixed doubles title clash scheduled for the final day.
