Greg Rusedski states if he thinks the Laver Cup is now bigger than the Davis Cup

Greg Rusedski has given his verdict on which is the bigger team competition out of the Laver Cup and the Davis Cup.

The Davis Cup is one of the biggest events in sporting history, having first begun all the way back in 1900.

Despite its prestige, there has been criticism for the Davis Cup in recent years after making some significant changes, including reducing the number of the popular home-and-away ties.

In tandem with the criticism of the Davis Cup has been the emergence of another team competition in the Laver Cup, which is similar to golf's Ryder Cup and was co-founded by Roger Federer in 2017. Now, former world number four Rusedski has revealed which event he thinks is now bigger.

Greg Rusedski believes the Laver Cup is now bigger than the Davis Cup

Rusedski previewed this year's Laver Cup in London on the most recent edition of his podcast, where he revealed that he had been asked by many people in his local gym after the event, and not the Davis Cup, which has also taken place over the past week.

As a result of this and a number of other factors, Rusedski believes that the Laver Cup is now a bigger event than the Davis Cup.

"Well, I was at my local gym this morning and they were talking about the Laver Cup," Rusedski began. "There was no talk about the Davis Cup. And these are the people that play tennis on the courts besides the gym. So they're using the gym, they're using the tennis courts and everybody's like, 'Oh, I'm going this weekend. Is Roger Federer going to be there this weekend at the Laver Cup?' was the question to me.

"I'm looking forward to seeing Carlos Alcaraz, Sascha (Alexander) Zverev, Taylor Fritz. So, it's got a different dynamic. It just seems like it's more important at the moment than Davis Cup and that's where Davis Cup has work to do.

"I think by moving it from city to city as they're doing, it makes it more special. So obviously, being at London, back at the O2, where we had the end-of-season champs for over a decade, is a great venue. This will be sold out every day and at the moment, is bigger than the Davis Cup."

Every winner of the Laver Cup since it began in 2017

The Laver Cup held its inaugural edition in Prague in 2017, and has taken place annually since then, barring the event being postponed in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. During this time, the likes of Federer, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal have all featured, as well as Carlos Alcaraz featuring in editions since 2024.

After eight editions of the Laver Cup, Team Europe has won five of those, but Team World have claimed victory at three of the last four editions.

Alcaraz has made sure to put his stamp on the event, as on his Laver Cup debut in 2024 he scored eight points, which is more than any other player had ever obtained at one single edition of the event, overtaking Federer's previous record of seven.

The Laver Cup will now return to Europe at the O2 in London, where it was previously held in 2022. This was when Federer officially retired from tennis, before Team World won the Laver Cup for the first time.

Hoping to replicate this for Team World in London this year are Alex de Minaur, Taylor Fritz, Learner Tien, Brandon Nakashima, Alexander Bublik and Francisco Cerundolo under the guidance of captain Andre Agassi and vice-captain Pat Rafter.
