Donald Trump has delivered his verdict on Bad Bunny’s half-time show, and it’s pretty much what you would expect.“The Super Bowl Halftime Show is absolutely terrible, one of the worst, EVER!” he posted on Truth Social moments ago.“It makes no sense, is an affront to the Greatness of America, and doesn’t represent our standards of Success, Creativity, or Excellence.“Nobody understands a word this guy is saying, and the dancing is disgusting, especially for young children that are watching from throughout the U.S.A., and all over the World.”The show was a “slap in the face to our country”, said Trump, who went on to write about how the sharemarket was at record highs and again called on the NFL to abolish the new kick-off rule.Still, it seems that Trump couldn’t help but tune into the official half-time show – even though his press secretary Karoline Leavitt suggested earlier he would watch Turning Point USA’s rival Kid Rock-headlined half-time show instead.Sometimes it feels like the football is the sideshow after the Super Bowl half-time show, and never more so than after that high-energy performance from Bad Bunny. The teams are back at it and Seattle started with a bit more punch and cut-through than in the dour opening half, particularly with Sam Darnold running the ball. But they were again stopped short of driving all the way to the line and into the end zone. So, it’s yet another field-goal to Jason Myers and Seattle now have a 12-0 lead. The Seahawks need to get their star receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba into more space. There is a touchdown coming, you can feel it.The number “64” was emblazoned on the front of Bad Bunny’s shirt for the half-time show performance – a hybrid between a traditional football jersey and traditional Puertorriquena guayabera. The number is most likely a reference to the destruction of his island home from Hurricane Maria in 2017. In the aftermath, the Puerto Rican government initially reported a death toll of 64 people, which was heavily scrutinised at the time. The New York Times reported the toll was probably far higher, at more than 1000.The government was forced to order an independent investigation into the death toll and subsequent cover-up. It found between 2658 and 3290 people died as a result of the natural disaster between September 2017 and October 2018.The number may also be a reference to Benito’s mother, who was born in 1964.Meanwhile, over on the conservative channel Real America’s Voice, the Turning Point USA “All-American Half-Time Show” has just kicked off.It is designed as an “anti-woke” alternative to the actual Super Bowl half-time show, featuring Bad Bunny and his progressive politics.Far-right commentator Jack Posobiec, who has 3.3 million followers on X, kicked off proceedings by declaring: “This one’s for you, Charlie.”It was a reference to assassinated conservative activist Charlie Kirk, who founded Turning Point. His widow, Erika, is now chief executive. The show began with someone playing a guitar riff of The Star-Spangled Banner, the US national anthem. We’re now being treated to a set from country singer Brantley Gilbert, who began with his song Real American. It’s not exactly subtle.Carrying the Puerto Rican flag on his shoulders, Benito is singing El Apagon (The Blackout) around lighting poles. The song is about the weeks and months Puerto Rico went through a blackout after Hurricane Irma in 2017, where thousands of homes and hospitals went without power.Listing all the countries in the Americas, Bad Bunny says, “We continue [to be] here”, launching into DTMF again. This song is about never letting go of loved ones and your home. The whole performance lacked an overt political message such as the one he had at the Grammys, but the sign saying, “The only thing more powerful than hate is love” was on the stadium’s main screen. He also held a football that had the words inscribed “Together we are America”, while listing each country.
