Ukrainian tennis players have advanced to the final of the Billie Jean King Cup

The Ukrainian national team finished as runner-up in the 2026 Billie Jean King Cup. In the final in Shenzhen, the Ukrainian tennis players lost to the Czech Republic 0–2. For Ukraine, this was its first final in the history of the tournament.

The Ukrainian national team finished the 2026 Billie Jean King Cup in second place. In the final, which took place on Sunday, September 27, in Shenzhen, China, the Ukrainian women lost to the Czech Republic 0–2. The Czech team won both singles matches and clinched the title early. After that, the doubles match was no longer necessary.

In the first match, Angelina Kalinina and Karolína Muchová took to the court. The Czech player won the match in two sets—6:2, 6:3. The match lasted 1 hour and 10 minutes. After that, Elina Svitolina still had a chance to save Ukraine. Her opponent was Linda Nosková, who in July of this year won her first Grand Slam tournament—Wimbledon—by defeating just Muhová in the final.

This time, Nosková proved to be the stronger player once again. She defeated Svitolina 6–3, 7–6. In the second-set tiebreaker, the Czech player won 7–5. It was this victory that secured the championship title for the Czech Republic. For Ukraine, this final was historic. The national team reached the decisive match of the Billie Jean King Cup for the first time. Thus, the Ukrainian tennis players finished the tournament with silver medals.

How Ukraine Reached the Final

The team’s path to the final began with a quarterfinal match against Belgium. The Ukrainians won the series 2–1. Angelina Kalinina first defeated Jana Ocypka. Then Griet Minnen evened the score in her match against Svitolina. Everything came down to the doubles match, where Kalinina and Lyudmyla Kichenok secured the victory and advanced Ukraine to the semifinals.

In the semifinals, the Ukrainian team faced the two-time defending champions—the Italians. This time, the Ukrainian team won 2–0 and advanced to the final for the first time in history. Ahead of the final, the official website of the Billie Jean King Cup described Ukraine as the team making its first-ever appearance in the tournament’s decisive match. For the Czech Republic, meanwhile, it was a chance to claim their 12th title.

The Czech Republic is once again the champion

The victory over Ukraine earned the Czech Republic its 12th title in this tournament. The last time the Czechs won the Billie Jean King Cup was in 2018. Only the U.S. team has more titles, having won the competition 18 times.

This year, the Czech team played a very strong tournament in terms of match results. In the quarterfinals, they defeated Great Britain 2–0, and in the semifinals, they beat Spain by the same score. In the final, the Ukrainian team also failed to win a single match—0–2.

Interestingly, the Czech team didn’t even need one of the world’s strongest doubles players, Katerina Sinyakova, this week. The team had already secured its victories before the decisive doubles match.

Ukraine finished the tournament with its best result ever

Until 2026, Ukraine’s best result in the Billie Jean King Cup was reaching the semifinals. This year, the team made it to that stage for the second time in a row and then took another step forward to reach the final. The Ukrainian team competed in Shenzhen with a lineup consisting of Elina Svitolina, Angelina Kalinina, Kateryna Zaviatska, and Lyudmyla Kichenok. Ilya Marchenko served as the team captain.

In the final, Ukraine was without one of its key players—Marta Kostyuk, who did not play due to an injury to her right wrist. Despite the loss in the final, the Ukrainian team had a historic tournament and reached the title match for the first time. In the end, Ukraine finished in second place at the 2026 Billie Jean King Cup, while the Czech Republic claimed the championship.
