Svitolina was unable to lead Ukraine to the semifinals of the Billie Jean King Cup

Elina Svitolina lost to Belgium’s Gret Minnen in the quarterfinals of the Billie Jean King Cup. The Ukrainian’s defeat marked an unfortunate end to her match for the Ukrainian national team at the tournament.

In the first set, the Belgian player got off to a stronger start. She won three games right off the bat, including one of Svitolina’s service games. However, the Ukrainian tennis player managed to even the score (4–4).

The rivals then exchanged breaks, forcing the set into a tiebreaker. The opponents were neck and neck throughout the tiebreaker, but in the final moments, Svitolina ultimately prevailed over Minnen (7–5).

The second set followed a similar pattern. The Belgian took an early lead with a break (2–0), but this time she didn’t let her advantage slip away. Minnen focused on her own serves and managed to close out the set with a narrow lead.

The third set was the most fiercely contested. The rivals held their serves in a hard-fought battle until the ninth game. It was then that Minnen seriously set her sights on a break. Svitolina saved four break points from the Belgian player, but on the fifth, the Belgian broke the Ukrainian’s serve. She then closed out the set and the match on her own serve.

Now, a spot in the semifinals will be decided in the doubles match. Earlier, the Ukrainian national team announced Angelina Kalinina and Lyudmyla Kichenok as their pair. Meanwhile, the Belgian team will field Magali Kempen and Lara Salden.

Earlier, Svitolina sent a heartfelt birthday message to Monfils on his 40th birthday.
