Tulfo calls for gov’t support for Eala amid possible WTA penalty

MANILA, Philippines — Sen. Erwin Tulfo on Monday called the government to support tennis star Alex Eala should she face a reported $10,000 penalty from the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) for choosing to represent the Philippines in the 2026 Asian Games.

During the plenary session on Monday, Tulfo backed Eala’s decision to play for her country instead of competing in a WTA 1000 tournament in China reportedly scheduled during the Asian Games in Japan.

“If she is to be fined for choosing to represent our country, isn't it only fitting for the government to extend assistance or support to her? $10,000 may be a significant amount, but compared to the honor of having one of our best athletes represent our country, I believe it is a price worth paying,” Tulfo said.

“We should not put Alex in a position where she has to make such a choice. She chose to play for the Philippines instead of prioritizing her professional career. She should not have to carry that burden alone,” he added.

Tulfo likewise urged the Philippine Sports Commission, Philippine Olympic Committee, and other concerned agencies to find a lawful and proper way to assist the athlete.
