Kevin Pietersen becomes England cricket team mentor

In England, former cricketer Kevin Pietersen has joined the national team’s coaching staff for white-ball formats. According to Sky Sports News, he will work as a specialist mentor until the 2027 Cricket World Cup, which is due to take place in Africa.

Pietersen will join the team this week ahead of the first Twenty20 match against Sri Lanka. The game is scheduled for September 15 in Southampton, with the first innings starting at 18:30 UK and Ireland time.

Coaching staff assessment

Acting head coach Marcus Trescothick said Pietersen is pleased to return to the England team. According to him, the former player’s knowledge of batting and his particular view of this aspect of the game could be useful to the national team in white-ball formats.

Trescothick and Pietersen were teammates in the England side that won the 2005 Ashes series. Trescothick also noted that Pietersen competed in leading white-ball cricket tournaments for a long time and won the Twenty20 World Cup in 2010.

Past disagreements with the cricket board

Pietersen’s appointment has attracted attention because of his previous disagreements with the England and Wales Cricket Board. After England’s 0–5 defeat to Australia in the 2013–2014 Ashes series, the board effectively ended his playing career with the national team. At the time, the organization stated that Pietersen had “lost touch” with the team and did not support then-captain Alastair Cook.

After ending his playing career in 2018, Pietersen occasionally publicly criticized the England team. In particular, during the tour of India in January, he spoke about the national team’s insufficient preparation. Pietersen will now work on a staff led by Brendon McCullum.
