20 World Cup final preview: Argentina vs Morocco

From 24 teams to two, Argentina and Morocco will meet in the 2025 FIFA men’s U-20 World Cup final on Sunday (19 October).

The youth football tournament for under-20 players has arrived at the grand finale in Chile, with South America and Africa represented in the final to crown the next champions.

No one has won more World Cups at this level than Argentina, the six-time winners and the reigning FIFA World Cup winners in men’s football. Victory in their eighth final would make them the first team to hold the men’s senior and U-20 titles simultaneously since Brazil in 2003.

The ‘Albiceleste’ (The White and Sky Blue) have won all six games so far, conceding just twice and with three consecutive clean sheets in the knockout stage.

Matteo Silvetti’s third goal of the tournament was the difference in their 1-0 semi-final triumph over Colombia, a sublime pass from Gianluca Prestianni finished off with an outside-of-the-boot finish from the Inter Miami man. Argentina are aiming for their first U-20 triumph since 2007, the year before their Olympic gold at Beijing 2008.

Meanwhile, Morocco have grinded their way through to their maiden final, having stunned both Spain and Brazil in the group stage to top Group C and eventually make it to the grand finale.

A dramatic semi-final with France saw the match head to extra time at 1-1. In the 125th minute, coach Mohamed Ouahbi made his second goalkeeper change of the match, bringing Abdelhakim Mesbahi on for substitute Ibrahim Gomis. It paid off: Mesbahi saved two penalties to send Morocco through 5-4 in the shootout.

The Atlas Lions are aiming to become the first African champions in 16 years, when Ghana became the continent’s first and currently only winners in 2009.
