Shamrock Rovers striker Gaffney retires at 36

Shamrock Rovers striker Rory Gaffney has announced his retirement from football after an injury-plagued 2026 where he failed to line out for the Hoops once this season.

In a sign of his influence upon the Tallaght outfit, his last domestic outing for the club was a match-winning turn in last year's FAI Cup final - his brace securing Rovers' first double since 1987, following a fifth league title in his six years at the club.

His last appearance for the club came in December's 3-1 defeat of Hamrun Spartans to close out their UEFA Conference League campaign.

The 36-year-old joined the club in 2020 and went on to score 50 goals during an exceptional period of success for Stephen Bradley's side.

He underwent a procedure on his Achilles in Sweden during the off season but an infection disrupted his recovery and he could not return to match fitness during the 2026 campaign.

The Tuam native began his League of Ireland career with Mervue United before a spell with Limerick earned him a move to the UK. He played with Cambridge United, Bristol Rovers (on loan), Salford City and Walsall (on loan) before returning to Ireland to join the Hoops for a trophy-laden conclusion to his career.

Gaffney played his part in some memorable European campaigns and mentioned those as a highlight of his time in green and white.

"Being part of this dressing room since 2020 has been a true highlight of my career. From the domestic successes to the European nights under the lights at Tallaght, I'm incredibly grateful for having the privilege to wear the jersey," he said.

"I'll always look back on my time here with great pride, and I look forward to supporting the lads from the stands."

He scored 37 league goals for the club in 143 games. Only five Rovers players have scored more league goals in the Tallaght era - Graham Burke, Gary Twigg, Aaron Greene, Ronan Finn and Gary McCabe.

Gaffney scored eight European goals, leaving him fifth in the all-time list of League of Ireland goalscorers in Europe.
