Top seed Carlos Alcaraz faces Brazilian teenager Joao Fonseca on Friday in a blockbuster second-round match at the Miami Open presented by Itau. The pair’s first Lexus ATP Head2Head meeting will begin not before 7 p.m. local time.

Alcaraz, the World No. 1 in the PIF ATP Rankings, arrives in south Florida with a 16-1 season record, according to the Infosys ATP Win/Loss Index. The Spaniard is aiming to rebound after suffering his first loss of 2026, a straight-sets defeat to Daniil Medvedev in the Indian Wells semi-finals.

Fonseca, 19, is one of the fastest-rising stars on the ATP Tour and the World No. 39 will now get his first crack at the 26-time tour-level titlist Alcaraz. Fonseca downed Fabian Marozsan 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 in the first round Thursday. Champion in Buenos Aires and Basel in 2025, Fonseca pushed Jannik Sinner in two tight sets last week at the BNP Paribas Open. Sinner went on to win the title.

Now, the tennis world’s eager wait for the first Alcaraz-Fonseca showdown will soon be over. The duo begins Friday's evening session at Hard Rock Stadium.
