The football world awoke this morning to the terrible news that longtime Buffalo Bills pass rusher Ed Oliver lost his two-year-old son. Details of what happened have been released and it's all the more tragic.According to local officials via TMZ, Oliver's son Ed drowned in the family's swimming pool at their home in Texans. Deputies reportedly responded to an in-progress life-in-danger call back on June 28. First responders were told that the child's parents had found him unresponsive in the pool.AdvertisementThe child was rushed to the hospital by an ambulance but was pronounced dead at 7:18 p.m.Tributes to OliverEarlier today, Bills general manager Brandon Beane released a statement offering condolences to Oliver on behalf of the organization."On behalf of the entire Buffalo Bills organization, we want to publicly express our condolences to Ed Oliver and his family on the devastating loss of his son. It's an unthinkable tragedy for any parent. We will continue to support Ed and his family as we all grieve this tragic loss," Beane said.AdvertisementOliver has been one of the unsung superstars of the Buffalo Bills defense over the past seven years, racking up 30 sacks, 56 tackles for loss and 76 QB hits from the defensive tackle position. Despite his on-field excellence, he has never earned All-Pro or Pro Bowl honors. There is currently a larger debate going on now over whether it was ethical for the story of Oliver's child to be leaked to the public in the first place. On one hand, the death occurred nearly two months ago. On the other hand, for the death of a child it should probably be at the sole discretion of the parents when and how to announce such a terrible tragedy.AdvertisementOliver chose not to publicly announce it for reasons that are entirely his own and none of our business. In hindsight, that probably should have been respected a lot more.
