England begins winter cricket tour after turbulent summer

In London, United Kingdom, the England cricket team concluded its home season with a convincing victory over Sri Lanka in the final match of the three-match One Day International series. The team will soon depart for its winter tour, Channel NewsAsia reports.

Changes in the team

The home season for the England team was accompanied by personnel changes and off-field incidents. Captain Ben Stokes unexpectedly ended his international career, while Brendon McCullum was dismissed from his position as coach of the Test team. At the same time, he retained his role as coach of England's One Day International and Twenty20 teams.

In the Test series against New Zealand, England lost 1-2. Stokes was left out of the squad for the second Test in June after violating the team's curfew. During the third match, which England lost by 160 runs, he announced the end of his international career, citing exhaustion.

Winter schedule

After Joe Root returned to the role of captain, England won the Test series against Pakistan 3-0. At the same time, preparations for the second Test were overshadowed by an incident involving bowler Brydon Carse near a nightclub in Derby: police put him in handcuffs, after which the player was left out of the national team squad.

Next month, England will play in Pakistan in a tri-series involving Sri Lanka. The team will then face three One Day Internationals and five Twenty20 matches in Australia, as well as a three-Test series in South Africa. Former New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming will become the new coach of the Test team and has promised a more measured approach after a period of the playing style known as Bazball.

In South Africa, England will also play three One Day Internationals. In March, Melbourne is scheduled to host a one-off day-night Test against Australia with a pink ball, dedicated to the 150th anniversary of Test cricket. Fleming said he aims to lead a Test team ranked first in the world.
