Serena Williams will play Wimbledon in her first tournament in singles since 2022.

Williams, a 44-year-old with a modern era record 23 Grand Slam women’s singles titles, returned to competition in doubles earlier in June.

Williams said her comeback is “really about my kids getting to see me play.” Daughters Olympia and Adira are 8 and 2 years old, respectively.

“An athlete is the best thing that you can be in the highest place, and having an opportunity to still be able to possibly do that one last time is kind of cool and exciting,” Williams said. “I don’t need to win. I’ve won more than most people have in their whole lives. So, for me, that is not important to me. It’s important that I keep reminding myself of that because I don’t have anything to prove. I don’t have anything to lose, and everything here is just to gain.”

Wimbledon airs live on ESPN and streams on ESPN+ on the ESPN app from June 29-July 12.

Williams plays her first-round match Monday, June 29, or Tuesday, June 30.

The specific date, as well as her opponent, will be known after the draw comes out this Friday.

Since Williams will be unseeded, she could play anybody in the first round — from top-ranked Aryna Sabalenka all the way down to a low-ranked qualifier or British wild card.

Williams and older sister Venus also received a wild card into the women’s doubles tournament. That starts Thursday, July 2.
