There's a fair bit of scepticism over the arrival of Enzo Fernandez, but could he be just what Maresca needs as he settles in as City head coach? The squads are set and attention now turns to what happens on the pitch. City have made the perfect start to Maresca’s reign with two wins from two to sit top of the early-season table ahead of the visit of Coventry this weekend.

City may be a little light in some areas and the depth could hamper their ability to fight on all fronts, but the Blues have enough options to field a first XI capable of competing with the best teams at home and abroad. Indeed it’s an XI that isn’t straightforward to select given the quality options available in some areas of the pitch.

City have included four goalkeepers in their Champions League squad - including summer recruits Geronimo Rulli and Max Chabot. Rulli was expected to be named in the squad after joining to replace James Trafford, but 18-year-old Chabot is more of a surprise.

The French teenager arrived from Angers and travelled with the group on the pre-season tour of Asia despite not having completed his move at that point. He did not feature in any games and the club discussed sending him out on a season-long loan before the transfer window shut.

However, having remained at the club Chabot has been included as one of 16 foreign players in City's List A for the first phase of the Champions League. Chabot is one of eight new faces for City in the competition, alongside Rulli, Enzo Fernandez, Allan, Iliman Ndiaye, Elliot Anderson, Ayyoub Bouaddi and Vitor Reis - the Brazilian centre-back who was on loan at Girona last year.

Maresca said City players were itching to know that Enzo Fernandez was signing as he welcomes a 'winner' to the Manchester City dressing room. The Blues killed any suggestion they would sign the Chelsea star at the beginning of the transfer window but sealed a £125million deal on its final day to complete a record summer of ins and outs.

Fernandez will form part of a new-look midfielder at the Etihad where more than £300m has been spent on three players in Fernandez, Elliot Anderson and Ayyoub Bouaddi. City rejected the opportunity to pay slightly lower for Fernandez earlier in the window, but did manage to bring down Chelsea's £135m asking price in the final hours as they finally delivered the club-record signing.

Iliman Ndiaye has been thrown straight into the Manchester City team to face Coventry - but fellow winger Allan misses out. Ndiaye completed a deadline day move from Everton for £65m and is one of two new faces of the summer in the XI alongside Elliot Anderson.

Enzo Fernandez starts on the bench following his move from Chelsea, with Ayyoub Bouaddi and Geronimo Rulli on there as well. However, there is no space for Allan as he works his way back to fitness. The forward, signed from Palmeiras for £35m in the final weeks of the window, is not fit enough to be in the squad for the Coventry game.

He has, though, been named in City's Champions League squad for their first eight games in the competition so could travel with the team to Porto next week as they look to get off to a winning start. Ndiaye, Fernandez and Bouaddi will also be relishing the prospect of playing on the biggest stage for City.

City are off to a strong start in the Premier League and they are heavily backed today to make it three wins from three.

That will feel good heading into the Manchester derby next week, where United will be desperate to land a blow on their rivals and show that Michael Carrick was the right man to be named as their permanent manager.

It won't be anything like a free hit for City because their fans expect them to turn up every time against United, but if they can head to Old Trafford with nine points on the board it will be a healthy buffer.

Maresca is looking for Phil Foden to step up and lead at Manchester City this season - despite not naming him in the captaincy group. The new Blues boss wanted an English member of his four-man leadership group and Foden put his hand up for one of the two available spots, but Marc Guehi was picked.

Guehi will work with Ruben Dias, Erling Haaland and Gianluigi Donnarumma to make sure there are no issues in the dressing room this season, and Maresca picked them out for their history in other teams. Despite making Enzo Fernandez captain when he was at Chelsea, the Italian has decided against giving the new club record signing any extra responsibility but Foden is in his thoughts.
