Son of Socceroos legend signs Premier League deal as Aussie Cup stars near blockbuster moves

A famous Australian name will return to the Premier League next season, with Marcus Neill signing his first professional contract with Sunderland FC.

The 18-year old is the son of former Socceroos great Lucas Neill, who served as national captain from 2006 to 2013.

The younger Neill — a striker in stark contrast to his famous father, who gained a reputation as a gritty, no-nonsense defender — has starred for Sunderland’s youth teams since joining the club from Liverpool in 2024, having also spent time at his father’s old club Blackburn Rovers.

Born and raised in England, Marcus Neill has long represented Australia at junior level, and scored an 89th minute winner in the Young Socceroos’ win over Cambodia at the ASEAN U19 Boys’ Championship in June.

“It’s the proudest moment in my career so far,” Neill said of signing his new contract.

“It’s a good milestone to have but now I just need to keep pushing on to the first-team and have a good career in the game.

“As a person and a player, I’ve developed a lot. The coaches have been really helpful for me, and they’ve kept me going and kept me humble along the way. I’ve had two really good seasons, and I’m looking to push on and get as far as I can.”

Neill quickly progressed to the Black Cats’ U21 team in Premier League 2, scoring 48 goals in 67 appearances for the club.

At just 16 years old, he became the U21 team’s second-youngest ever goal-scorer in a 2-1 win over Arsenal in December 2024.

“Marcus fits a model and the profile of the sort of player we look for – he ticks a lot of the boxes and we believe he can develop with us,” former Sunderland head of recruitment Stuart Harvey told local media after a purple patch of seven goals in two games in mid-2025.

Lucas Neill earned 96 caps for the Socceroos from 1996 to 2013.

He was among the Premier League’s doughtiest defenders during stints with Blackburn Rovers (227 games) and West Ham in the 2000s, famously breaking Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher’s leg with a nasty challenge during the 2003/04 Premier League season.

Despite his English birth, the younger Neill is in no doubt that the Socceroos are in his blood.

“Since I was young, it’s always been green and gold,” he told the Sydney Morning Herald in May.

“That’s all I remember – growing up in England, but always had the green and gold on, watching and supporting all Australian sports, and not even just football. Cricket, everything.”

SOCCEROOS HERO LINKED TO GIANTS

Australian World Cup captain Harry Souttar is a man in demand, with former Premier League club West Ham leading the charge to secure his signature.

The 27-year old defender was outstanding as the Socceroos secured passage through to the knockout stages of the tournament, with a penalty miss to begin the team’s shootout loss to Egypt in the round of 32 his only blemish.

Souttar signed a five-and-a-half-year contract with Leicester City reportedly worth up to £20 million ($38 million) in January 2023.

But the 2015/16 Premier League champions’ relegation to League One has him eagerly seeking a move, with the man mountain reportedly keen to continue playing at the highest level.

Leicester themselves are said to be happy to move him on for financial reasons.

Former club Stoke City, where Souttar played from 2016-2023 and currently compete in the EFL Championship, are among his other suitors, as are the Ryan Reynolds-owned Wrexham FC and Sheffield United.

But the Hammers are firmly sitting as frontrunners as they seek promotion again this season.

The centre back has had a disastrous injury run in between starring performances at the 2022 and 2026 World Cups, rupturing his Achilles tendon in late 2024 while on loan to Sheffield, and only returning late in Leicester’s 2025/26 season.

With Socceroos captain Mat Ryan benched for the majority of the World Cup, Souttar served as acting captain throughout, impressing with his leadership and calm head at the back.

IRANKUNDA RUMOURS INTENSIFY

Portuguese powerhouse Sporting Lisbon has been strongly linked to young Australian sensation Nestory Irankunda.

The 20-year old, long seen as the next big thing in Australian football, impressed at his maiden World Cup, scoring in the Socceroos’ 2-0 win over Turkey.

Irankunda is just one year into a five-year contract with EFL Championship club Watford, but things haven’t always gone smoothly at the Hornets, with criticism mounting over his inconsistency.

According to reports, Sporting are keen to find a second striker with the versatility to play on the wing, with Pedro Gonçalves linked to a departure.

Watford are reportedly seeking a €15 million ($A24m) transfer fee, having rejected a smaller offer of £10 million from the Premier League-bound Hull City.
