Did He Break Up With Her?

If tennis fans had any doubt that No. 9 ranked Amanda Anisimova could compete on a level with the world’s most elite players, the 24-year-old who was born to Russian immigrant parents in Freehold Township, New Jersey, left little remaining doubt on Thursday.

Anisimova, a former teenage tennis star, handed former world No. 1, four-time Grand Slam tournament winner Naomi Osaka her first-ever defeat in a Grand Slam semifinal or final. Osaka, with two titles each in the Australian and U.S. Opens, had never lost in eight matches past the quarterfinal stage of a Grand Slam event.

Anisimova Faces the Match of Her Life

By beating Osaka, Anisimova set up a dramatic women’s final on Saturday against the current No. 1 ranked Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus. The rivals last met in July when the American pulled off an upset, vanquishing Sabalenka 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 in a match that was deemed by most tennis observers to be a instant classic.

Actually, from Anisimova’s perspective, the win was not really an upset. The New Jersey native has actually dominated the Belarussian, winning six of their nine career confrontations.

But her most recent loss came in the French Open Round of 16 in May, when Sabalenka won in straight sets.

That didn’t change the fact that Anisimova just seems to have Sabalenka’s number, beating more often than she has defeated any other woman on the tour.

Personal Tragedy Left Her Shattered

None of her success has come easily to Anisimova. After reaching the semifinals of the French Open in 2019 at age 17, her career was thrown off track when what she called “the worst thing that ever happened to me” took place.

Her father, Konstantin, who had also served as her first coach, was found dead of a sudden heart attack. In the aftermath of the loss, Anisimova found it hard to even leave her house, much less focus on tennis.

She pulled out of the U.S. Open that year to cope with her grief.

But she found her way back the following year with the help of a new romance, starting a relationship with Aussie Tyler Roos — a former Australian rules football player, reality TV personality and male model.

Their relationship is shrouded in secrecy, however. Most of the online images showing them together in clearly affectionate poses date from 2020 — but according to a July report by the International Business Times, they remain together today.

Are They Still an Item? Or Not?

Judging by her public statements and behavior, however, that would seem not to be the case. She has not mentioned Roos in interviews, and after winning the Wimbledon semifinal this year, Anisimova thanked her sister and her mother for their support, but made no mention of Roos one way or another.

Though Roos appeared on the Australian version of the reality show, The Amazing Race, models professionally for the BrooklynMGMT agency, and is the son of a legendary Australian Rules Football star and coach, Paul Roos, the 29-year-old maintains a quiet public and online profile.

Unclear When Roos and Anisimova Split — If They Did

If indeed the couple broke up, it may have been around the time Anisimova took an unusual break from her tennis career in 2022, citing depression brought on by the need to “keep pushing as if I’m not a human being,” in the world of professional tennis.

Or it could have been even earlier. They stopped posting Instagram images of themselves as a couple in late 2020, meaning that Anisimova’s time with Roos may have been nothing more than a fling.
