Georgia released Willy Sagnol ahead of its Nations League match against Ukraine

French coach Willy Sagnol stepped down as head coach of the Georgian national team on the eve of the Nations League match against Ukraine.

Ramaz Svanadze, 45, has been appointed the new head coach of the Georgian national team. He signed a contract with the federation through 2028.

Svanadze will lead the Georgian national team in their upcoming match against Ukraine. The Nations League second-round match will take place on September 28 in Tbilisi.

49-year-old Willy Sagnol was dismissed after the opening round of the Nations League. In the tournament’s first match, the Georgian team lost 0–1 to Northern Ireland at home.

Sagnol took over as head coach of the Georgian national team in 2021. During his tenure as head coach, the team played 57 matches.

At the same time, it was under Sagnol’s leadership that the Georgian national team achieved a historic result. The French coach led the Georgian national team to the European Championship finals for the first time in history.

At Euro 2024, the Georgian national team advanced to the round of 16.

The team will now be led by Ramaz Svnadze, who will prepare the Georgians for their home match against Ukraine in the second round of the Nations League.

The Georgian Football Federation announced the termination of its contract with the coach.

On Monday, September 28, the Ukrainian national team will play its second-round match of the 2026/27 Nations League season. The Ukrainian team will face the Georgian national team on the road.
