Adidas unveils $94m World Cup ad starring Beckham, Chalamet and Messi

The sportswear giants dropped the five-minute blockbuster on YouTube, and it comes with a cast list that would not look out of place on a red carpet.

Oscar-nominated actor Timothee Chalamet takes centre stage as he assembles a fantasy three-man team to take on the neighbourhood’s most feared local legends.

The mission is to beat the backyard crew whose ‘win or go home’ streak has survived 30 years of challengers.

And Chalamet does not travel light.

Barcelona sensation Lamine Yamal and Real Madrid superstar Jude Bellingham down tools and put El Clasico loyalties aside to join forces.

USWNT star Trinity Rodman completed the side as they prepared for a showdown with the apparently unbeatable trio of Clive, Ruthie and Isaak.

Adidas turned neighbourhood gossip into World Cup theatre, with Chalamet breathlessly recounting how the local gang had even seen off football royalty.

Zinedine Zidane, David Beckham and Alessandro Del Piero are all namechecked as victims of the backyard dynasty.

And if that was not enough star power, Lionel Messi and Bad Bunny are seen watching on from the sidelines, oozing superstar cool.

The fairytale feel is pushed even further by cameos from Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembele, Barcelona duo Raphinha and Pedri, Germany ace Florian Wirtz and Mexico striker Santiago Gimenez.

Dune actor Chalamet revealed he has a personal connection to New York’s Pier 40 sports grounds where much of the film is set — and says he loved rubbing shoulders with the soccer greats.

Chalamet said: “I used to dream of playing with these guys – you know, I was playing at Pier 40 as a kid, thinking about Beckham’s free kicks, Del Piero’s goals, and Zidane’s volleys – doing my own versions.

“I love this game, so it’s unbelievable to be doing this with adidas, captured with the best to ever do it.

“I’m a traditionalist, I don’t know soccer, I know football, and I can’t wait for this summer’s World Cup.”

The glossy film is part advert, part mini-movie, selling their ‘You Got This’ message from their most recent campaign.

Advertising industry experts believe Adidas spent more than £50m ($A94m) on the commercial.

Argentine legend Messi, former Three Lions captain Beckham and French icon Zidane are all believed to have commanded multi-million-pound appearance fees.

Fortunes were also spent on state-of-the-art AI, which shows off a selection of iconic Beckham haircuts during his role as a teammate of Zidane and Italian talisman Del Piero.

Washington Spirit star Trinity adds glamour while a cameo from Puerto Rican singer Bad Bunny boosts crossover appeal to music fans.
