Let's take a second to talk about the back three

Harry Souttar will captain the Socceroos for the second time, after leading them in San Diego against Switzerland.

He's unsurprisingly joined by Alessandro Circati, but more surprisingly they are joined by Cameron Burgess.

18-year old Lucas Herrington, who is being courted by Spanish giants Barcelona (who may or may not have had a bid rejected already depending on what you read), started alongside Souttar and Circati in the Socceroos past two games.

But Tony Popovic has opted for experience in his defensive unit.

Jordy Bos and Jacob Italiano start as the wingbacks as expected.

Mat Ryan, Patrick Beach and Paul Izzo are on the field.

But the Turkish keepers have just walked out and it is LOUD.

The Türkiye fans are chanting away. This is going to be a fun, fun evening.

The crowd building up slowly in Brisbane as well

Our very own Simon Smale is on the ground at the Socceroos fan site in Brisbane.

Kick-off is approaching

ACDC's Highway to Hell is now blasting out as the Aussies and the Turkish warm up.

The stadium is predominantly red, though I think the red seating is helping with the perception (I hope).

Here's how Türkiye will start up this afternoon

Some love for the Socceroos from Vancouver

How lucky are we to have our opening game in Vancouver? !!! Such a beautiful city and Aussies always welcome.

More reaction to the Beach over Ryan call

Big difference between last week’s friendly and the World Cup. Dropping your highly experienced goalkeeper who is also your captain is a nonsense imho.

Slowly filling up, and there is a solid section of yellow

After their big afternoon preparing for the march through Vancouver, Australian fans are slowly filtering into BC Place.

We're still around an hour away from kick-off, but a decent congregation of fans sits down to my left, behind the goals.

Rihanna is blasting out the speakers, and we're just waiting for the sides to come out for their warm-ups.

There is a huge jumbotron in the middle of the pitch. It really is an impressive venue

How good are the two team kits looking ahead of this afternoon's clash?

How about the Socceroos looking slick as hell in these suits pre-match?!

Meanwhile, I wonder whether Jackson Irvine was telling Cam Devlin that he'd been left out in this shot.

Adam's not feeling good about Popovic's XI

Massive call from Tony Popovic to be naming Patrick Beach between the sticks for the Socceroos on opening day of our World Cup campaign especially given his lack of experience at international level and the fact that with Arda Guler starting for Turkey their midfield are likely going to be running riot round us.

- Adam

I agree Adam, it's a HUGE call. Although, the flip side is Beach has to feel an immense amount of confidence that his coach has this much trust in him.

BC Place is a thing of beauty

From where I am sitting, BC Place presents beautifully.

Entirely enclosed, it will be absolutely deafening once the crowd packs in.

I've been told they imported lawnmowers from Europe at around $30,000 each, and it gets mowed every three days.

What do we think of Beach over Ryan in goal?

C

By Chris De Silva

An absolutely massive call from Tony Popovic to overlook his captain Mat Ryan for the World Cup opener.

Patrick Beach has played all his club football in Australia and has just one cap to his name. Will he be ready to step into the World Cup cauldron?

That being said, Beach was excellent in goal last weekend against Switzerland in what was his international debut.

Socceroos vs Türkiye team news — Ryan overlooked by Popovic

C

By Chris De Silva

Tony Popovic has confirmed his starting XI for the World Cup opener.

Patrick Beach will once again start in goal over skipper Mat Ryan, having impressed in last week's friendly against Switzerland. Harry Souttar will captain in Ryan's absence.

Paul Okon-Engstler has also been given a start ahead of Jackson Irvine.

There was talk over whether Nestory Irankunda would be used as a starter or off the bench, and he's confirmed to start on his World Cup debut. Mo Toure is also fit to start and lead the line.

Scotland still clinging to a 1-0 lead over Haiti

We're into the final quarter hour in Scotland's World Cup opener against Haiti.

The Scots still lead 1-0 courtesy of John McGinn's first-half goal.

The head-to-head history between Socceroos and Türkiye

C

By Chris De Silva

This afternoon's clash will be just the third meeting between Australia and Türkiye's men's teams.

Türkiye has won each of the two previous meetings, a pair of friendlies in May 2004.

The Türkiye fans are up and about as well

C

By Chris De Silva

If you're worried about the Socceroos badly outnumbering Türkiye in the streets and in the stands, I don't think that'll be an issue.

Also personally LOVE the kebab > schnitzel sign. Could NOT agree any more.
