Mitchell Hay: Nottinghamshire sign New Zealand wicketkeeper-batter

Nottinghamshire have signed New Zealand wicketkeeper-batter Mitchell Hay to replace Kyle Verreynne for the remainder of the season.

Hay, 26, arrives just two days after Verreynne had his latest stint at Trent Bridge cut short when recalled by Cricket South Africa at the weekend.

Notts' director of cricket Mick Newell said losing Verreynne with three County Championship games left to try to retain the Division One title was "not ideal".

Head coach Peter Moores echoed the sentiment of "disappointment" about the loss but, in announcing Hay's arrival, declared the Black Caps international as a "hugely exciting" and "quality" successor.

"He is a mature keeper with the ability to bat in the top six, which fits the role we need coming into the business end of the season," Moores told the club website., external

Hay, who has spent his domestic cricket career playing for Canterbury in New Zealand, joins a Notts side that are second in the table and just four points adrift of leaders Somerset.

He has so far scored more than 2,100 first-class runs, with a strike average of 45.14, across his career.
