Messi and Lamine Yamal to be immortalized on a unique 1-of-1 Topps card

Whenever a historic moment takes place in world sports, collectible giant Topps is almost guaranteed to find a way to preserve it forever. This time, the trading card powerhouse announced the creation of an ultra-exclusive 1-of-1 card featuring one of the most remarkable images in modern football history: a young Lionel Messi holding a baby Lamine Yamal in a bathtub.

The photo exploded across social media during the 2026 World Cup, especially after fate brought both players together again on the sport’s biggest stage: the World Cup Final.

Nearly two decades after that unforgettable photoshoot, a 19-year-old Lamine Yamal faced a 39-year-old Messi with the world title on the line. The ending felt like something written for a Hollywood script: Spain defeated Argentina 1-0, with the young Spanish star lifting the trophy in front of the player who unknowingly became part of his childhood story.

The humble origin story behind the viral photo

While the image gained legendary status after the events of the World Cup, its beginnings were far more modest. The photograph was originally part of a charity campaign to raise funds for UNICEF, featuring FC Barcelona players posing alongside children for a 2008 calendar.

Yamal’s family participated in a UNICEF community initiative in the Rocafonda neighborhood of Mataró, Spain, and won a raffle that gave their newborn son the opportunity to appear in a photo session with a Barcelona player for the calendar.

That player could have been almost any star from the legendary Barcelona squad at the time — from Ronaldinho and Thierry Henry to Xavi Hernández, Andrés Iniesta, Carles Puyol, or Víctor Valdés. But in a twist of fate, it was Lionel Messi who ended up holding the baby, creating an image that would become part of football history years later.

A holy grail for sports card collectors

The new Topps card will be included in the upcoming Topps Stadium Club UCC set, scheduled to be released later this year.

As a true 1-of-1 collectible, the card is expected to become one of the most sought-after pieces in modern sports card collecting, with collectors viewing it as a potential holy grail item due to the extraordinary connection between two generations of football legends.
