Rio Ferdinand says Kobbie Mainoo has a ‘superpower’ that Man Utd need to use more, ‘This kid…’

Kobbie Mainoo has been nothing short of excellent since Michael Carrick put him back in the starting line-up for Manchester United.

As the games under Michael Carrick go by, Kobbie Mainoo makes Ruben Amorim look worse and worse.

Mainoo keeps proving Amorim wrong through his performances, doing things that the former Manchester United head coach didn’t believe he could.

Carrick has said it’s a joy to watch Mainoo play football, and with his game a lot more rounded than it was previously, including crunching tackles, being the hardest worker on the pitch, and also cross-field passing.

Now, Rio Ferdinand has commented on Mainoo, hailing one superpower the midfielder has.

It is safe to say that Kobbie Mainoo is back.

After 18 months of struggling for a variety of reasons, the 20-year-old is better than ever, dominating the midfield three games running.

While his performances have been excellent, Ferdinand has been left impressed by one particular quality.

On the Rio Ferdinand Presents YouTube channel, he explained Mainoo’s biggest quality.

“Kobbie Mainoo’s superpowers are that he’s press-resistant, and he can beat the press. His ability to manipulate the ball and use his body to get out of any situation in any area of the pitch, and to have the balls to say ‘I want to take the ball in those tight areas.’

“There are a lot of players who can do this in training sessions, but when it comes to a match, forget doing it, they don’t even show to receive the ball to do it.

“Kobbie Mainoo has done it at the highest level, in finals where he has been the main player to win games for Man United and England in a tournament.

“That’s a superpower in his game, and sometimes you think ‘well, he might be a little bit weak here and there, but if I can get him in the position to do that, it doesn’t matter so much.’

“This kid, his talent.”

Carrick has also praised Mainoo’s mental strength, which allows him to handle such pressure on the pitch, with this quality needed for a player to be elite.

Michael Carrick is the perfect manager to fulfill Mainoo’s potential

Mainoo’s ability on the ball is tremendous, and his ability to control a game means United play better football, and those around him benefit.

Alongside this technical quality, Mainoo is also developing the grit needed to be a midfielder as he has won some big tackles, duels, and run more than anybody else under Carrick.

Additionally, we are beginning to see Mainoo pick up the ball and ping it across the pitch with a switch, something he hadn’t always had in his locker.

Under a legendary midfielder like Carrick, Mainoo could learn a lot and will massively improve, as he already has.

This alone is worth making Carrick permanent.
