Thailand beat Pakistan 4-0 in FIFA ASEAN Cup opener - Dawn

Thailand’s national team defeated Pakistan 4-0 in the opening match of the FIFA ASEAN Cup at Si Jalak Harupat Stadium in Bandung, Indonesia. Forward Teerasak Poeiphimai scored twice. As Dawn reports, the Pakistani team is taking part in the tournament as an invited national side.

Two goals before the break

The Pakistanis, ranked 198th in the world, held off their opponents’ attacks during the first half-hour. Goalkeeper Yousuf Butt saved a header from Jude Soonsup-Bell in the 30th minute, but Teerasak converted the rebound to open the scoring in the 31st minute.

Ten minutes later, Thailand doubled their advantage. A passing error by Pakistan captain Abdullah Iqbal led to a quick attack, which Soonsup-Bell finished with a close-range strike. Another goal by the Thai national team before the break was disallowed for offside.

Teerasak’s goals after the break

At half-time, Pakistan head coach Nolberto Solano made a triple substitution: Shayek Dost, Haiyan Khattak and Alamgir Ghazi came on in place of Ali Raza, Ali Agha and Abdullah Shah. After that, the Pakistanis controlled the ball more actively and tried to create chances, but failed to score.

In the 60th minute, Teerasak played a one-two with Supachai Chaided and struck with his left foot. The ball, after a deflection off Haris Zeb, looped over Yousuf Butt and went into the net. Six minutes before the end of the match, Teerasak scored his second goal of the game, capitalising on a pass from Peeradol Chamrasamee and a touch from Kakana Khamyok.

Pakistan will play their next group-stage match against the Philippines on September 29, and will face Vietnam on October 2. Earlier this year, Nolberto Solano’s team won the Diamond Jubilee International Football Tournament in the Maldives, their first title in 74 years.
