BCCI cracked down after IPL players were linked to late-night hotel guests, restricted-area reels and ignored security protocols, says report.

The BCCI has tightened its grip on player movement and off-field activity during the IPL after multiple shady incidents raised alarm within the Board’s Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU).

Franchises were recently issued a detailed advisory after the ACU flagged repeated breaches of protocol during the ongoing 2026 season. According to a recent report from news agency PTI, the concerns ranged from players moving without prior security clearance to content creators being given access to areas considered sensitive from an operational and anti-corruption perspective.

One incident that drew particular scrutiny involved a young player who reportedly sought assistance from members of a franchise’s social media team to create content for his personal accounts. While such collaborations are increasingly common in the IPL ecosystem, the matter escalated when visuals from inside the playing arena and training sessions appeared on the content creator’s private social media handles.

As per the report, the BCCI officials were particularly concerned about unrestricted access to players and support staff, especially by temporary personnel hired during the tournament.

Franchises have since begun reviewing their internal systems. Several teams are reportedly reducing the size of their content units, particularly short-term hires brought in exclusively for the IPL season.

The Board’s advisory also warned franchises about the possibility of “honey traps" and emphasised the need for tighter monitoring of outsiders entering team environments.

Alongside concerns over digital content creation, the BCCI also raised objections over unauthorised guests visiting players at team hotels.

Player saved by ‘seniority’

In one case, the report said, a player was reportedly found hosting visitors in his hotel room late into the night on multiple occasions. When questioned by the ACU, team management allegedly downplayed the matter, citing the player’s seniority within the squad.

“I am not surprised," the report quoted a former IPL team manager as saying. “At times, the players use their stature within the team to bend the rules. Once I told a player to host his friends in the lobby restaurant, not in his room. I told him there are some board instructions on such matters. He just snapped: ‘You don’t worry. I will tell the board (officials), if they ask’."

Former IPL officials acknowledge that enforcing discipline uniformly across squads can be difficult, particularly when senior or high-profile players are involved. One former team manager recalled advising a player to meet friends in public areas such as the hotel lobby rather than inside his room, only to face resistance.

In another instance, a player allegedly failed to respond to repeated communication attempts from team officials before returning to the hotel late at night, accompanied by friends. According to individuals familiar with the matter, no major action followed, as the player was close to the franchise’s owners.
