Heathfield woman's death now a murder case

What was first believed to be a suicide in Heathfield has taken a dramatic turn, with police now treating the death of a 46-year-old woman as a murder case.

Authorities confirmed that the woman, Elana Brooke, was found in Heathfield, with initial reports suggesting she had taken her own life before further investigation uncovered evidence pointing to foul play.

A 24-year-old man has since been arrested in connection with her death, with police spokesperson Sgt Wesley Twigg confirming that the suspect appeared in the Wynberg Magistrates’ Court on a charge of murder, as per People’s Post.

The accused, identified as Tristan Perez, made his court appearance on Wednesday, 25 March, where the case was postponed.

According to police, the matter has been remanded to Wednesday, 8 April, when a formal bail application is expected to take place.

Perez, who is understood to be a local cricketer, remains at the centre of the ongoing case as investigations continue.

Brooke’s death has also been felt beyond the immediate community, with the Western Province Cricket Association paying tribute to her and offering condolences to her former husband, David Brooke, and their family.

In a statement, the association described her as ‘a cherished friend of the WPCA family’.

‘Her unwavering support for our senior teams spoke volumes about her passion for the game and her connection to the Western Province cricket community,’ it said.

The organisation added that her presence and influence would continue to be remembered within the cricketing community, particularly at WSB Newlands, where she was a regular supporter.

The case remains before the court as legal proceedings continue.
