Man Utd news: Club 'insider' faces accusations as Michael Carrick hits out

1
Controversy has struck at Manchester United as rumours persist over Michael Carrick's future and who will become the club's next permanent manager

Despite returning Manchester United to the Champions League, uncertainty still reigns over Michael Carrick's future at the club. Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his team have maintained a permanent manager will be appointed come the end of the season and that looks set to remain the case regardless of Carrick's accomplishments.

United return to action with a trip to Sunderland on Saturday, where a fourth straight win would put third place almost beyond doubt. They currently sit six points ahead of Liverpool, who could still leapfrog them, and need just about every position they can get to help raise more funds for the summer.

However, it remains questionable as to whether Carrick will be the one around to spend said finances. And one supposed club insider is making headlines for his alleged scoop on who could replace him, as Mirror Football dissects the latest headlines coming out of Old Trafford.

Gary Neville faces awkward accusation

United icon Gary Neville was put in a tough spot during the latest discussion regarding the club's next managerial move. That's after former team-mates Paul Scholes and Roy Keane turned the screw on their old pal for his "insider knowledge" behind the scenes at Old Trafford.

All three appeared on the most recent episode of the Stick to Football podcast, where the topic of Carrick and United's next manager once again came up. Neville asked: "The big question is, what do Manchester United do about the manager, Michael Carrick?

"The question is, from people who support the appointment of Michael, for people who are more nervous, the question is who would you put in?"

Republic of Ireland great Keane then turned to Neville and said: "What's your vibes because, you know, you are on the inside." But before Neville could answer, Scholes interjected: "I know what he is going to say... [Julian] Nagelsmann. He says Nagelsmann every time I see him."

Germany boss Nagelsmann has been one of the names bandied about as a potential successor for Carrick after World Cup 2026. That prospect seems like a non-starter, however, considering Nagelsmann is contracted to lead Die Mannschaft until after Euro 2028.

But Neville appeared to almost take offence to the insinuation he had an inside edge at Old Trafford and responded: "I don't know Nagelsmann. I've not spoken to anybody at Manchester United about him at all, that's an absolute fabrication.

"I mention him because he's been at Hoffenheim, RB Leipzig, Bayern Munich. He's got 10 years of experience managing in clubs with incredible coaching pedigree."

So according to Neville, Nagelsmann is purely his own personal pick if Carrick is replaced based on merit alone. However, fans and even his own friends wonder if he isn't perhaps privy to some additional information on the matter.

Carrick 'disappointed' over FA Youth Cup

Carrick has joined in the chorus of voices disappointed with the scheduling of the FA Youth Cup final. United's under-18s will meet their Manchester City counterparts next Thursday in a bid to be crowned best of the next generation.

City's Joie Stadium, home of the development and women's teams, had been slated to host the decider. Fans had hoped the fixture would be moved to the 53,400-seat Etihad Stadium once the derby final fixture was confirmed, but City rebuffed the idea to focus on improving its North Stand ready for the last Premier League weekend of the season.

It was then that United offered up Old Trafford as a potential venue to dramatically increase the capacity for such an occasion. However, many have expressed their frustration after City shunned the proposal to keep the clash at the 7,000-seat Joie Stadium, Carrick included.

"I'm disappointed, to be honest," he said. "I think getting to the Youth Cup final always seems to have been a thing where you play at the main stadium and it's such a showcase event for players of that age group.

"So we're disappointed. I think I've had some amazing memories, some of my best memories, in that competition of playing with your close mates and it's a shame that it hasn't worked out for whatever reason.

"But listen, for the boys to go there...it's a fantastic game, it's a great opportunity. I'm sure the game itself will be good, and I'm looking forward to going and supporting the boys."
