Wimbledon vs Plymouth Argyle Live: Updates from League One game

Tom Cleverley's Pilgrims are in south-west London this afternoon to play relegation-threatened Wimbledon

Plymouth Argyle are taking on AFC Wimbledon at Plough Lane this afternoon in a match with huge implications for both teams and the outcome of their seasons.

Tom Cleverley's Pilgrims cannot afford any slip-ups if they are to keep alive their hopes of making the League One play-offs.

They drew 2-2 with Exeter City in the Devon derby at Home Park last Saturday and were then overtaken in the league table in midweek by Luton Town and Huddersfield Town.

As a result, Argyle are now in ninth position in the table and Cleverley believes it will take 10 points from their final four games of the season to finish in a play-off spot.

Wimbledon, meanwhile, are three points clear of the relegation zone, with three more matches remaining, following a 2-0 home defeat by Stockport County on Wednesday night.

Wimbledon equalise

Instead of Argyle leading 2-0, it is 1-1 in the 51st minute as a cross from James Tilley, who is not closed down on the right, is slid into the net by Alistair Smith.

Missed opportunity

Argyle really should be 2-0 up in the 50th minute. Owen Dale is played through and rather than shoot with his left foot he cuts inside and passes to Caleb Watts, who could have had a dfirst time shot but instead he tried to take the ball around goalkeeper Nathan Bishop and miscontrolled the ball as he did it and the chance was gone.

Junior Nkeng has a shot blocked behind for a corner by Argyle's Alex Mitchell as Wimbledon attack their home end.

Lorent Tolaj is booked by referee Elliott Swallow after an incident which led to Argyle being awarded a free-kick. I'm not sure why that yellow card was given. Wimbledon defender Ryan Johnson was also cautioned by referee Elliott Swallow.

Caleb Watts drops deep and sets Argyle on the counter attack with a pass out to Owen Dale, who advances forward and lets fly with a shot which is blocked by a Wimbledon player.

Defender Julio Pleguezuelo is back in Argyle's matchday squad for the first time since he was substituted at half-time in the 1-0 defeat away to Rotherham United on Febriuary 28 due to the recurrence of a calf injury. Pleguezuelo is named among the seven substitutes.

Early League One results

Two games in League One kicked off at 12.30pm and involved three teams in the play-off picture.

Bradford City, who host Argyle on Tuesday night, drew 2-2 away to Barnsley, while Bolton Waanderers came from 3-1 behind to draw 3-3 at home to Huddersfield Town despite playing most of the second half with only 10 men.

Bolton equalised in the 11th minute of added time with a goal from former Argyle loan signing Ibrahim Cissoko.

Huddersfield have moved up to seventh place in the table, above Luton Town on goal difference, and are three points behind Stevenage, who are sixth.

Argyle are in ninth, a point behind Huddersfield and have played two games fewer than the Terriers, ahead of their match againsy AFC Wimbledon.

Argyle's second Plough Lane visit

Argyle's only previous visit to AFC Wimbledon's Plough Lane home ground, which opened in 2020, was in September 2021 when they beat the Dons 1-0 in a League One game with a goal early in the second half from Ryan Hardie.

Pre-match stats

After beating Argyle in the reverse fixture in October last year, AFC Wimbledon will be looking to claim a first Football League double against the Pilgrims.

Argyle have lost just one of their nine away league games against AFC Wimbledon (W4 D4), a 2-1 defeat in the third tier in December 2018.

AFC Wimbledon manager Johnnie Jackson have won two of his previous three Football League encounters with Argyle (L1), winning with Charlton Athletic 2-0 in November 2021 and 2-1 in the reverse fixture in October.
