Michael Carrick is back in his native northeast this evening as his Manchester United visit the Stadium of Light to face Sunderland. The Red Devils have little to play for as they cross the Pennines after they secured a place in next season’s Champions League by beating Liverpool last time out, meaning all eyes will be trained on their captain. Bruno Fernandes has enjoyed a fine campaign and was last night crowned the Football Writers’ Association men’s footballer of the year and he still has a chance to make history this season. One more assist in United’s last three games will see him equal Thierry Henry and Kevin de Bruyne’s record of 20 in a season.Sunderland, meanwhile, have seen their hopes of qualifying for Europe largely dashed by a grim run of spring form, which has seen them win just five of their 17 league matches since the turn of the year. That leaves them 12th in the table heading into this weekend, but they could finish it as high as seventh should they win here.
