PLANS for a massive new dome arena on the northside have been given conditional planning permission by Limerick City and County Council.The Technological University of the Shannon (TUS) is seeking to develop and open a new, 22-metre high multi-sports facility at its newest local campus at Coonagh.That has moved a step closer, with the council granting conditional planning permission.It means if there is no appeal to An Coimisiún Pleanála within a month, it will be upgraded to full permission.Included in the development is a 200-metre indoor cycling track.UPDATE: Gardai investigate circumstances of road traffic collision in County LimerickThe college initially sought planning permission for the development last year before withdrawing it.It was March this year when the plans were reactivated with a fresh application going to council.A 7,201 square metre mixed indoor-use facility is planned, built around the cycle track.The arena will be able to be configured for gymnastics, badminton, volleyball, tennis, soccer and other compatible sports, as well as educational and community activities.It will provide seating for around 476 spectators.It’s anticipated if the arena does go ahead, it will be able to also host examinations, graduations, conferences, exhibitions and cultural events.Some 32 car parking spaces are planned, with the council stipulating at least six of these be made available for electrical vehicle charging.A total of 48 covered bike spaces, plus new pedestrian links are also in the blueprint for the development.It’s foreseen the arena will take the form of a contemporary indoor dome rising to 22.2 metres.Council gave the go-ahead to the development subject to 18 conditions. It includes a stipulation that the college pays the local authority €288,040 to benefit public infrastructure and facilities in the area.Work is restricted to 7am to 7pm weekdays and 8am to 2pm Saturdays.
