Real Madrid have doubts over the suitability of superstar trio despite individual quality

Despite going two back-to-back seasons without any major trophy, Real Madrid have undeniable quality in the team that ranks among the best in Europe.

Their attacking trifecta of Kylian Mbappe, Jude Bellingham and Vinicius Jr is something every club in Europe can only dream about.

Despite that, Real Madrid have had limited success even as these players individually have performed superbly, as evident in the recently concluded FIFA World Cup.

Doubts growing over the suitability of the trio

According to journalist Ramon Alvarez, there are growing doubts at Real Madrid about the suitability and synergy of their three main players in Mbappe, Vinicius and Bellingham.

The trio enjoyed only limited success last season, even though Bellingham largely endured an injury-laden campaign while Vinicius performed quite well during the second half of the season.

When played together in the same lineup, they have simply failed to gel well enough. As a result, Real Madrid have struggled to show that level of consistency, despite having a world class team.

Keeping that in mind, there are real reservations within the club about whether the three can form the basis of the attack for several years to come, regardless of the immense individual quality each of them possesses.

It must be noted that Mbappe finished as the tournament’s top scorer and claimed the Bronze Ball, Bellingham dragged England to a third-place finish with a string of decisive displays, and Vinicius was among Brazil’s brightest performers before their early exit.

Yet that individual brilliance has repeatedly failed to translate into a cohesive collective at club level.

Trio about to break this summer?

The bigger question now is whether the trio might actually be broken up sooner rather than later, and much of that uncertainty centres on Vinicius.

The Brazilian’s contract situation remains unresolved, with his current deal set to expire in 2027.

Negotiations over a renewal have dragged on for months, with Real Madrid’s latest offer still falling some way short of the salary Vinicius and his camp are demanding.

Should an agreement fail to materialise, Real Madrid have made it clear they would rather sell the winger this summer than risk losing him for nothing in a year’s time.

New coach Jose Mourinho is understood to be keen on resolving the matter quickly, disliking prolonged uncertainty within his squad.

Marc Cucurella’s summer has taken a remarkable turn.

On the same day Spain opened their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign in the United States, Mexico, and Canada, Real Madrid officially announced the signing of the left-back from Chelsea in a deal worth €60 million.

A little over a month later, the left-back is now a world champion after La Roja beat Argentina in the final on Sunday night.

In doing so, he is now the first player to be crowned a double world champion, having lifted the inaugural FIFA Club World Cup in its new format with Chelsea last summer.

Vinicius’ first public message

Only hours after Spain defeated Argentina in the final, Real Madrid superstar Vinicius Jr. congratulated Cucurella on the World Cup triumph and publicly welcomed his new teammate to the club.

The Brazilian shared a photo on social media of Cucurella kissing the World Cup trophy, originally posted by Real Madrid, alongside the message:

“Congratulations and welcome, Cucu!”

It marked the first public interaction between the two players ahead of what the club hopes will become a strong partnership on the left side of the pitch.

A standout tournament

Cucurella was one of Spain’s most consistent performers throughout the World Cup.

The left-back started every match and established himself as one of the tournament’s best players in his position thanks to his defensive reliability, relentless work rate, and attacking contributions down the flank.

His performances played a key role in helping Spain capture their second World Cup title.

Ready for a new challenge

After enjoying a short break following his World Cup success, Cucurella will report to Real Madrid to begin pre-season with Jose Mourinho’s squad.

He arrives in the Spanish capital full of confidence after producing one of the finest tournaments of his career and establishing himself as one of the national team’s standout performers on football’s biggest stage.

At Real Madrid, expectations are high that he and Vinicius can form one of the most dangerous left-sided combinations in Europe.
