Man dies after hitting goalpost while being towed by quad bike in regional NSW

A man in his 20s has died after hitting a goalpost while being towed by a quad bike at a recreation reserve in regional New South Wales.

Emergency services were called to the reserve on Osborne Yerong Creek Road, at Osborne, about 70 kilometres west of Wagga Wagga, just after 2:30pm on Sunday.

Police said the man was seriously injured after being towed by the quad bike and hitting a goalpost on the oval.

Bystanders provided first aid before emergency services arrived, but the man died at the scene.

He is yet to be formally identified.

Community in shock

The small rural and farming community has a population of fewer than 30 people.

Lockhart Shire Council Mayor Peter Sharp said the community was in shock and the crash would ultimately affect everyone.

"Osborne is a very tight-knit community, and it's a profound tragedy that's going to affect the community a great deal," Mr Sharp said.

He said the two men involved in the incident were members of the football club, which is central to the region's social calendar.

The club's senior team had played in the Hume League grand final on Saturday, losing by six points to Henty.

"It brings the community together, when farming times are tough it's a place we can go and talk about things.

"Everybody who is a member of the footy club would have known the young men involved."

Mr Sharp said the council was working with the local health district (Murrumbidgee Health District) to organise counselling for people in the community who needed support.

Driver charged

Police arrested the quad bike driver, a 20-year-old man, after the crash.

He was taken to Wagga Wagga police station for mandatory testing, where he was charged with dangerous driving occasioning death, driving in a dangerous manner and negligent driving occasioning death.

He was granted conditional bail and is due to appear in the Wagga Wagga Local Court on Wednesday, September 23.
