Former Glamorgan bowler Barwick dies aged 65

Former Glamorgan bowler Steve Barwick has died at the age of 65.

Barwick, affectionately known as Baz, started life as a fast-medium seamer before switching to off-cutters.

After making his first-class debut in 1981, Barwick left Glamorgan in 1996 having made 480 appearances, claiming 456 first-class wickets and 312 List A victims.

Barwick's first-class career best was eight for 42 against Worcestershire at New Road in 1983.

He played a crucial part in the bowling attack which helped Glamorgan win the Sunday League title in 1993.

"Everyone at Glamorgan is saddened to hear this news," said chief executive Dan Cherry.

"Steve was one of the legendary characters in the club during the 1980s and 1990s and was a key member of the Glamorgan team that lifted the Sunday League title in 1993.

"His off-cutters won him fame and admiration around the county circuit and more than 30 years later, his achievements are still held in the highest esteem."

Barwick's home cricket club, Briton Ferry Steel CC in Neath, wrote on social media: "Some sad news this morning as we learn of the passing of Stephen R Barwick, former captain of Briton Ferry Steel CC, Glamorgan seamer and recent inductee to the Glamorgan Hall of Fame.

"A great man, loving father and grandfather. Rest in peace Baz, thanks for the memories."
