Chukwuemeka's Austria switch

Austria v Jordan (05:00 BST)

Former Chelsea and Aston Villa midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka could make his World Cup debut as a substitute in this match.

The Borussia Dortmund man represented England 25 times at youth level between under-16 and under-20 levels. But in March of this year, Chukwuemeka opted to switch to represent Austria, the nation of his birth.

Already, it has been an impressive start to senior international football for the playmaker with one goal in his three senior caps.

While born in Vienna and raised in Northampton, Chukwuemka would have also been eligible for Nigeria due to his parents hailing from there.

Team news - Alaba and Sabitzer start, Chukwuemeka and Arnautovic on the bench

Austria v Jordan (05:00 BST)

After starting in Austria's warm up game against Tunisia, Marko Arnautovic drops to the bench in favour of LASK striker Sasa Kalajdzic, on loan from Wolves.

There is no starting place for Tottenham defender Kevin Danso, nor Carney Chukwuemeka, formerly of Chelsea.

Veteran David Alaba captains Ralf Rangnick's side, and Bundesliga duo Marcel Sabitzer and Konrad Laimer have a place in the starting XI.

Jamal Sellami names his team for Jordan's first ever match at the World Cup.

Rennes winger Musa Al-Tamari, the only member of this squad playing in a major European league, has a place in the line-up.

Mohannad Abu Taha, who impressed in Jordan's warm-up match against Colombia, starts at left wing-back.

Austria end long wait for World Cup return

Austria v Jordan (05:00 BST)

Those who are used to seeing Austria consistently appearing at European Championships may be surprised to know that this is Austria's first match at a World Cup since 1998.

Austria have qualified for each of three last editions of the Euros, but have missed out on featuring in any of the previous six World Cups.

At the World Cup, Austria do not boast the best recent record. Of their last nine matches, just one has resulted in a win. That was against this year's co-hosts United States in 1990.

This time around, Ralf Rangnick's side made very light work of their qualifying campaign and will look to continue on that form at the tournament itself.

This is the second game at this venue which, despite being home to the five-time Super Bowl-winning 49ers, lies 35 miles south-east of San Francisco in Santa Clara, in the heart of Silicon Valley.

Opened in 2014 at a cost of $1.3bn, it is mainly uncovered. Fans watching Saturday’s 1-1 draw between Qatar and Switzerland, which kicked off at midday, had to slap on the suncream but the remaining five fixtures are all scheduled for the evening or late afternoon.

The 68,827-capacity venue is usually known as Levi’s Stadium, but Fifa rules require it to adopt a generic title and strip out all sponsor branding - something that has been done here with rather makeshift-looking tarpaulin sheets hung over the offending signage.
