Ogunsakin claims first Grand Slam junior main-draw win

In New York, United States, 17-year-old Nigerian tennis player Oluwaseun Ogunsakin earned the first main-draw victory of his career at a Grand Slam junior tournament. In the first round of the junior US Open, he defeated 15th seed Kuan-Shou Chen of Chinese Taipei, 5:7, 6:3, 7:5.

As Premium Times Nigeria reports, Ogunsakin lost the first set but managed to come back and advance to the second round. Chen was ranked 16th in the world junior rankings.

Route through qualification

Before competing in the main draw, Ogunsakin successfully came through qualifying in New York. He defeated Poland’s Tymon Litwicz 6:3, 6:0, and then overcame top seed Felix Roussel of Canada, 6:3, 6:4. These results secured the Nigerian a place among the 64 participants in the main draw.

Next match and doubles

The junior US Open became Ogunsakin’s third consecutive Grand Slam tournament. Previously, he reached the second round of qualifying at the junior Roland Garros and also made the Wimbledon main draw. At the grass-court tournament, he reached the boys’ doubles semifinals.

In the second round of the US Open, Ogunsakin will play South Africa’s Connor Doig. The Nigerian is also set to compete in doubles alongside Ntungamili Raguin of Botswana.
