Guy Sasson falls short of calendar Grand Slam at US Open

Israeli wheelchair tennis player Guy Sasson fell one step short of a calendar Grand Slam in doubles at the US Open in New York, United States. Together with Dutch player Niels Vink, he lost to Sam Schroder of the Netherlands and Australian Jin Woodman 2:6, 6:3, 7:10 in the decisive match tiebreak.

Before the US Open, Sasson and Vink had already won doubles titles at the Australian Open, the French Open and Wimbledon. At the American tournament, they were the top seeds, while Schroder and Woodman were seeded second. The Israeli players' performance was reported by The Jerusalem Post.

Singles semifinal

Sasson, the world No. 3 and third seed in the quad singles division, reached the semifinals, where he faced his partner Vink. In the first set, the Israeli came back from 2:5 down to level the score at 5:5, but the Dutch player won 7:5, 6:3. Vink later won the singles title.

Israel ParaSport Center CEO Boaz Kramer praised the performances of Sasson and Sergei Lysov. According to him, winning a Grand Slam tournament is the result of a long and difficult journey that requires dedication from athletes and their teams. Kramer also said that the center would continue supporting both tennis players and their head coaches, Ofri Lankri and Damien Martinique, on the road to LA28.

Performances by Lysov and Brand

Sergei Lysov, who competed at the US Open for the second time in the men's wheelchair division, lost his opening singles match in three sets. In doubles, he was also eliminated in the first round after losing in a match tiebreak.

Seventeen-year-old Dan Brand made his junior US Open debut. He won his first-round singles match but lost in three sets in the second round after severe cramps in the middle of the deciding set. In doubles, Brand and Austrian Tilo Berman, seeded fifth, reached the second round, where they lost to Yannick Alvarez of Puerto Rico and American Ryan Cozad.

After a short visit with his family in Israel, Brand is set to play at the J500 Osaka Mayor’s Cup World Super Junior Tennis Championships, to be held on September 21–27 in Osaka, Japan.
